Post subject:  Another interesting movie...

got a link to a movie the other day..

it is called "GasLand"

a doco via hand held camera interviewing people who have had hydraulic fracturing done under their land to access the natural gas...(think it is coal seam gas...happy to be corrected!!)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dZe1AeH0Qz8

very scary.... especialy with the people who can set fire to their tap water...

contaminated ground water.....

i have been told that aus doesnt use the same methods to get the gas as the u.s. ... anyone confirm?

yeah, it's called "fracking" i think.. using pressure to push the gas to where they want it.. pumping who knows what, causing all kinds of groundwater contamination

freakin idiots and the whole "drill baby drill"

"obtaining" the TV doco now - disturbing is an understatement....

Post subject:  Re: Another interesting movie...

yes keith it is fracking...

the fluid is pumped in to the drill holes at force to fracture the rocks and release the natural gas... but this fracturing also, it appears, allows the gas and hydraulic fluid to enter the ground water..

i also "obtained" the movie... it is worth watching...

some of the interviews appear edited..but that might be the obtaining...

it is a worry that there is no real concern for ground water contamination in the pursuit of more energy..

soap box warning...

sooner than later we, as in all of us, are going to have to learn to consume less... there is no way we can keep devouring resources and think we can just keep doing it forever..

That sounds almost as bad as in-situ leaching. What a brilliant idea, for mining uranium. Drill a couple of holes in the ground, pump hydrochloric acid down one of them. Acid seeps through the ground dissolving the uranium, then suck it all up the other hole... What could be simpler, nothing highly visible for people to get upset about, brilliant..

Shame about the radioactive acid spreading through the ground getting into the water tables and aquifers, but once again, out of sight out of mind.

One doco I don't recommend watching, if you can call it a doco, "what in the world are they spraying". A conspiracy quasi-doco about "chemtrails". People who are convinced that the government is spraying things all over the highly populated areas like US and Europe to kill off people in populated areas. Bit of research shows that not one scientist or university has ever agreed with such claims, they are just vapor trails, and yes there are heaps of them and they crisscross most of the US because there are about 30,000 flights a day in the US...

As you say Lost Hippy, we have to stop consuming so much and this includes travel.

LOL, right the government doesn't need to kill people off, people do it themselves far more efficiently and if the government keeps supporting some of the big business (like the gas companies and BIG AG, GMO food) we might well have a greatly de-populated planet before we know it. :?

I have a lady friend who's family owns property in rural QLD...

They've been drilling holes all over the property.... for coal seam gas.... and pouring the wastes into giant settling ponds... with big signs everywhere stating that the ponds are toxic...

Well guess what... most of those ponds... have now been emptied into waterways with the recent flooding in QLD....

Bet ya don't hear bugger all from the pollies about it either....

not saying that i agree with the chemtrails thing (tin foil hat on the frits and i dont want to go to those websites without it working 100%)

BUT, i've never been a fan of something being proven/disproven due to popular opinion of the university crowd..............history tells us much :)
