Federal Gov's $60 million subsidy to Chevron, Shell, Exxon Mobil a gross misuse of public funds
Date: 24-Nov-2006

The Federal Government’s decision to subsidise the environmentally discredited Gorgon gas project with $60 million from its greenhouse funds is a serious misuse of Australian taxpayers’ money, the Conservation Council of WA and the Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF) said today.

“The proposal to establish a gas plant on Barrow Island, a Class A Nature Reserve, poses a serious risk to our global atmosphere and to the endangered species of Barrow Island” said Don Henry, ACF Executive Director.

"Chevron, Shell and Exxon Mobile are three of the world’s wealthiest companies – yet they are holding out their hands for public money to fund a project that threatens the future of our climate and its unique species” said Chris Tallentire, Director of the Conservation Council of WA.

“Barrow Island is home to several of Australia’s most endangered animals and the project threatens to pump huge amounts of greenhouse pollution into the atmosphere” said Henry. “To throw precious public money at such an environmentally disastrous project is highly irresponsible”.

“This project could contribute between 6-8.1 million tonnes of CO2 per annum - more than 1% of Australia’s national greenhouse emissions - because the gas field has unusually high levels of greenhouse gases in it” said Tallentire.

“The WA EPA has made it clear that the Gorgon project is environmentally unacceptable. Yet the Federal Government is prepared to pour money into it.

“Given the constant flow of new information about the environment and the actual resource, the WA Government must demand that the Gorgon project return to the drawing board,” said Tallentire.

Ahhh, when our illustrious leader said greenhouse emissions were on top of his priority list I mistakenly thought he meant cutting them... doh me!

Now guys and gals,

I don't think it's right to criticise our PM.

He has said on more than one occassion that we don't need to worry, he'll look after us and I for one don't believe he would lie to us

OH NO YOU CAN'T

Little midget numbnut passed a law about that ...

immediate, unconditional detention... same sort of deal as a "terrorist".

In fact theoretically everyone of us on this thread is probably in breach for "criticism" opf the government.

Personally and sincerely I'm hoping the little general gets another three year term.

I think Australia really need s to learn once and for all the dangers of rascism and fascism
