maybe he is too busy googling mining jobs....

so not much has changed over a lot of years in some towns
i think they work a lot diferent to fly in fly out mining
i work fly in fly out and we get tested every day for alcohol
and can be tested for drugs at any time
at least i know im working with a bunch of sober guys that
can do the job safe

BUT when they get home now theres a diferent story all together
cashed up kids with a seven day weekend

Is there anything new in those statements F&F.

Actually Kalgoorlie is a lot better than it used to be years ago when I first went there, its refered to as more of a "Family" town now than a "single mans" town.

You also have to remember its a money driven place so people are working hard and they play hard as well because they have the means to do so and you can go to a pub 24hrs there, drug testing also plays a part, because pot stays in your system for so long other drugs are preferred.

All in all what the article states is not new, just someone trying to re-hash an old story to fill space

They reckon there could be a few aspects of the mining boom that have quite negative effects on different parts of society. The mining boom is great for all those involved, but if you own a small business in metal working or electrical, or any other trade field that there's a demand for in the mining sector, then you can't get workers... At least not unless you're willing to pay mining pay packets, and not many small businesses can afford that.

I can see some sectors will begin to suffer from this huge wages gap.

In the first part of the cycle, definitely true however, those earning that money don't stash it in the pillow case at home and leave it there, they spend it, much of it in the local economy, so it flows around.

I know this doesn't help, but the mining companies are also finding it hard to find enough people.

Well that's the theory of course, but some recent reports I've heard haven't been painting such a rosy picture. Especially for those living in the mining towns... I hear it constantly when my mate comes down from Karratha where he's a teacher... But then I'd complain too if I was living in Karratha...

Yeah, Karratha and other towns up there are highly unbalanced, however you're changing the subject a little, though it does make a good point. I would say that the big losers from all this would be Govt employees - they don't fit into the commercial/business sphere that we were discussing as they have no way of directly benfitting from the increased flow of cash. And the Govt is always going to be the last entity to react to the improved situation (unless you're an actual polly).
