I have a question for the Aussies and Kiwis on the board.

I've been thinking for the past couple years that it may be time fairly soon to move to one or the other of your fine homelands. Your countries rank very highly in terms of economic and personal freedom, which are very important to me. Your taxes are high, but government control seems to be low (which to me, again, is good).

So my question is simply: what would I have to do if I just decided that I'm going to move to your fine country tomorrow?

Normally, just ask nicely Tamo... but seeing as you're an aquaponicist... you're welcome... let us know when you're arriving... :lol:

Seriously, you'd have to make enquiries through respective immigation departments/embassies...

I'd suspect that entry qualifications/requirements would be pretty similar between the two countries...

Oh... by the way... you'll have to learn to drive on the "right" side of the road... and learn to measure things in celcius and metric... just like the rest of the world does.... :wink:

There are a few different ways to go about immigration to Aus, lots more options if you are qualified and skilled. Probably best to start here and look at the options. www.immi.gov.au

New Zealand? No idea, why would you want to go there? :lol:

lots of people move to new zealand cause it is the easier of the 2 countries to get into. There imigration laws are a little lighter than the OZ ones. However because of the relationship that New Zealand and Australia have, NZ people can move within Australia with no real restriction, those who imigrate to NZ tend to use it as a stepping stone to get into Australia.

This.

I think NZ pretty well takes anyone, after 5 years you can get citizenship and then automatic entry into Australia.

You won't get into Australia unless you have a skill we want, thankfully our border controls are pretty awesome. That is unless you want to come over in a boat, you get a 3 month holiday on our resort island for nothing too. Of course there's the other trick of coming over on a working / holiday visa and then trying to shack up with an Aussie bird.

Does Aussie Immigration list those skills anywhere by any chance?

I'm not looking to move this year, but could easily imagine making the move in the next 5 years as the fiance finishes grad school and we get an idea of what kind of life we want for our family.

I think the approval process takes at least 12 months...

Thanks for all the replies. 12 months seems like a really long time to get a visa. Either way, I submitted my passport renewal form today :)
