Does anyone here know anything about electric fences?

mine is buggerd but the energiser is still flashing.

Cannot find any break in the system either.

Hey is the ground still attached.

Also is the any shock near the unit or is it all dead?

disconnect it from the fence and test it

incase there is a short to ground

and have somebody ready with a camera - we need a good laugh!

First thing I did was disconnect from fence and stuck my finger of the positive terminal then I tried to grab the nearest person to share the fun...

energiser is still putting out a punch let me tell you.

I have a feeling that my ground rods (3) are too close together based on the research I have done on the web. I also noticed when I was fiddling with the fence on far side of block that when I grabbed the electric fence (no zap) but when I also grabbed a supposedly plain wire fence - aye carumba a mighty zap.

I have since worked out that as the people who have installed / modified this fence over the years, they have touched the regular fencing wire with the earth. As I have read this is ok in some situations, but it would also explain why I sometimes get a zap when opening the gates. I don't think that the connection to the regular wire was meant be this way for this install.

I guess tomorrow I will be digging up star pickets from gravely clay soil.

FJ, i haven't had any experience with electric fences personally, but my understanding is that the electrified wire is run along the fence and supported by ceramic (sometimes plastic?) insulators. If your pickets are metal then having the HV output tied to the "normal" fencing wire is going to cause a short cct path to the ground. Possibly also giving you shocks from the gate depending on the ground conductivity where the star pickets are.

I'd be making sure that the only wire connected to the output is the one with insulated supports, and that its not touching any other wire along the run.

Holding an old fluro tube by one end and touching the other to the wire should give you a less "painful" testing method, but might not be very visible in strong light.

The only thing I know about electric fences is that they can be unpleasant things to deal with when you have one leg either side of the fence before you realise that they are an electric fence.

All I know is its not a good idea to have pissing contest over one. Learnt that as a child.

roflmao .VB... I used to live in the sticks and I started pissin thru some bushes once and completely forgot bout the electric fence...........but not for much longer. Atleast I had an excuse for wettin me pants lol

Back home they just liked good old barbed wire. Had to watch when you were snowmobiling could take your head right off

and good for fixing cfs cronic fatigue syndrom.

What is worse than a plain electric fence?

An electric fence that has been earthed to the regular fence that has patches of barbed wire. What were people thinking when the put this thing in?

I was leaning over both the electric and barbed fence pruning the neighbours trees that were shorting the fence to ground. Accidentally brushed my right man boob on the barbed fence while leaning on the electric fence with my male genitalia. F***K (2 u's) That was a really hot shock...

BTW - I got the fence fixed. I think it was a combination of bad grounding of earth rods and tree branches touching the electric fence.

Needless to say I have had a shocking day.
