Apparantly the quake measured 8.3.... the tsunami generated waves up to 3m through the Pacific region... and reached to the second story of buildings in Pago Pago....

And the surge capsized yatchs in NZ harbours...

No reports yet about affects on Fiji and/or Tonga...

Mum just got back recently. She fears for her friends in a village said to no longer exist. :-(
our hearts go out to all those unfortunate souls.
They only had 7 minutes or so between the quake and tsunami. There was no time to warn anybody.

WTF happen to the early warning system they were talking about??
7 minutes?? I guess their idea of early warning is to alert them to pray, rather than to get the frack out of there...

I saw it on the news before passing out on the floor with a pillow. Had a dream I was floating in water with the pillow in a storm. If anything I need to stop watching the news before falling asleep.

I read that an alarm alerted people to get to higher ground, doesn't give much of any detail though. http://www.reuters.com/article/latestCr ... SN30210782

Makes me feel secure knowing I live far enough away to avoid being caught in such things. My thoughts and prayers still go out to the people who are suffering though.

There had to be early natural signs..the shore water recedes way out into the ocean. Also the animals freak out...they did just before the huge 2004 Tsunami.

A tsunami is caused by an earthquake quite often.
The quake was measured 7 minutes before the wave hit.
So any receding of water or warning by government had to be initiated within 7 mins just for ppl to know they were in trouble.
Even with instantaneous warning, they would only have 7 mins to evacuate.
To expect warning of such an event is to expect warnings and accurate predictions of earth quakes.
With our science atm it's simply not possible.

Seven minutes is still seven minutes and every second will better your odds, even if it is only going up to a second story floor, up on the roof- anything to get to higher ground. I'm not saying that will be enough to save you- fast moving water with a great deal of force behind it and carrying large debris is a tough one to survive- it's like a cancer diagnosis, if you go through the motions (treatment in this case) of saving yourself, you have better odds.

Agreed... but even scrambling a jet takes 3 minutes or so... How are you going to warn people?
The warning signal is church bells ringing.
so we have to register an earthquake. work out where it is. Crap our pants, ring all the churches, the pastors need to get to the phone then run up to the bell tower and start ringing.
It's no wonder there wasn't much time.
All I'm saying is "Don't bitch about early warning systems, the earthquake was so close they didn't stand a chance"

Well I suppose you pointed out a very valid point. They invested money in a early warning system to detect but they have not invest a early warning system to deploy the warning... I read somewhere that they had young men running around hitting gas containers to make the alert sound... There has got to be a better way than that...

I'm sorry but after the devastation from the 2004 Tsunami, if I felt an eathquake (you said it was close, so it is assumed that you could feel it and the shock waves would reach you first), if I was near the shore, I wouldn't take any chances. One thing about nature, she is very good at eliminating the sick, the eldery, the young, the stupid, the unadaptable and the unaware- and this goes for all species across the board.
