average household use is 191kL/year (500L/day). You can use up to 520kL before the price/kL increases to $1.65, which is pathetic IMO

Now the state government wants to spend $1.5b on increasing desalination capacity, not so that we can reduce our dependence on the Murray, but so that we can remove water restrictions!

meanwhile local government in the northern suburbs we are using stormwater to recharge the aquifer and reuse later. The scheme apparently has three times the return on investment of desal...

SA Water has put investigating use of harvested stormwater in the northern suburbs on its "to do" list for 2010. It says Adelaide might produce 20 gigalitres of recycled stormwater by 2025, which is a bit out of date since the northern suburbs are already approaching that figure.

Was out the front with the local water guy trying to learn where the mud patch in the front lawn was coming from. Long story it was from the tap and pop ups. So good news they don't have to dig up the lawn. Interesting thing I learned was the water meters don't count a small flow. So setting up a tank with a slow feed will not show up on your water bill.

About 6 months ago they hooked up town water to our suburb (about 30 kms from town) since then, every day one of the council workers drives out to the end of the pipeline and releases 000's of litres of water out into an adjascent paddock. The reason? Because there isn't enough use of the water by the residents to use up all the water in the pipeline and by the time it gets to the houses towards the end of the pipeline it no longer meets their water quality standards so they have to pump out heaps of water so the "fresher" stuff, full of chlorine, can make it all the way through.
