Here in Louisiana the economy seems to be doing fine, I do not think the national or world economic downturn has hurt anything here yet. I think the Bush carpetbaggers have left the state now that the Fema easy money ran out and migrant and local workers are doing the real work of reconstruction. This may just be an anomaly caused by so much storm destruction. I've noticed several members in other countries posting of haveing to relocate for work. Is it really getting that bad?

Things are tough here in Orlando, FL. My work depends a great deal on corporate meetings and trade shows. We have had several big shows/meetings that normally support a large amount of production work cancel and now that many of us are thinking we need to supplement by perhaps picking up supplemental employment, there isn't much to be had.
I averaged out the amount of local work I had last year (which was a sort of bad year) and it came out to about 1.8 days of work per week. I'm fearing this year will be even worse with the economy not yet recovered.

At least we have food, I'm just hoping we keep bringing in enough to pay the bills.

Even the big pockets are starting to hurt. I work for the electric company covering parts of Aspen, Colorado (deep pockets vacation there) among other areas and we're finally starting to see fewer new houses being connected and more older houses going empty. This is the first time in about a decade or two that the growth trend has been broken.

Even after the dot-com bust a few years back, growth here only slowed, instead of stalled. However resorttown, usa is finally feeling the pinch, and its driving even more of those who provide basic services out of the area.

A number of businesses are closing here. Cheap oil and lack of loans has brought the oil sector to a crawl. Apparently they barrow money to drill wells, even if they have billions..

Lots of big turnarounds and expansions going on in the plants up and down the river. I know they were putting a lot off while the margins were so high but I not only see repairs but improvements. They are betting on something. When oil is cheap, exploration doesn't seem to make sense, but if you stand a better chance of getting subsides when it is. Understand when oil is cheap refining makes huge profits, when oil is expensive production makes huge profits. So you see it doesn't matter what the price of oil is to the big three just that you flip flop to maximize tax breaks and incentives. But generally low oil prices makes better profits for corporations while high oil prices makes better profits for oil producing nations. I believe the cost of energy helped bring down the banks, then the global economy, People still have to drive to work to eat. With the chemical, refinery and plastics plants taking the (sorry for lack of a better word) opportunity to repair and upgrade, They must be hopeing or planning for an upturn in the near future. Lots of plants in the area are bringing in foregn guest workers and translators and paying nice per diems. Skilled labor around here is still at a premium. Expecially while first quarter budgets are still full.

A driller has asked my dad if he can drill a second oil well on his place. So, that company is banking on good oil profits in the future.

Here in the Hudson Valley we are hurting. We are close to NYC so the financial markets fall-out has put lots in our area out of work. Loads of older folks have lost their investments and foreclosures are on the rise. IBM and other big factories are cutting back and have announced lay-offs.

My son lives in Arkansas. He was in the repo buisness. The load companies have stopped reposessing vehickles as they can't sell them and would have to pay to repo and store them. They've stopped drilling for natural gas, which was booming and hiring like crazy. My son is going back to college to finish his nursing degree. He was a medic in the army. Now is a good time to go to school.

Having a well on location nets a few thousand for the physical location. The real money is in the ongoing mineral royalties. Its a % of the price of oil.
