Hey gang,

I might be moving to Brizzy for work.

This is a really broad and general question at this stage but with the following requirements, what areas around Brizzy would you suggest (if even achievable) for me to start looking at:

* Within 1.5hr car or public transport commute of the city (where I may be working)
* To rent for the first 12 months (location not as important)
* Then buy (location very important)
* Ideally semi-rural
* Kel has a horse. Although it does not need to be on our property, close proximity to ajistment (spelling?) options is pretty important during the rental phase
* Does not have to be too close to the coast but if it’s within say 30-45min that would be a bonus

I guess the deal here is that we'd ideally love to love in the country on 10-20+ acres. However, for me for the next 5-10 years, work is based in the city and we are aware that limits our options greatly if I want to keep commuting to under 1.5 hours (one way).

So if any Brizzy locals are able to make some suggestions it would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Aaron

Yep my commute is 1hr 40 minutes one way and it affects quality of life. If you're not tied to a location already then live close to work and rent!

All well and good to say live close, but how many landlords accept a horse as a pet?
It would seem that his lifestyle dictates semi-rural, and the commute is either something he has chosen to do, or does already, and has no problem with it.
Does anybody from Brisbane or surrounds, know of, and be able to suggest a nice area with semi-rural acreage?

depending on whether you need public transport nearby - you can get what you want way closer than 1.5 hrs away (though of course commute time when driving will depend on traffic - on occassion it takes me up to 50-60 minutes to drive the 23km into work

I'd suggest you start by looking on one of the realestate sites - then ask us about the areas that seem to fit your criteria of price, distance, features and we can tell you whether they are dodgy.

My advice is to sell the horse and keep the girl - give her money to go riding on weekends and vacations, but make damned sure you're not away three hours every day like I am.

Actually it works out to about 12 hrs every day, 7:30 AM to 7:30 PM. It strains relationships eventually.

Good idea Dave - but may not be as easy as it seems .

I agree though that the commute will be a killer. Time spent with family is limited enough these days as it is, without having to add 3 hours commute to work time.

Maybe try for an acre closer. Living a long way from the city really isn't practical if your work is going to be based in city long term - it is something I have often struggled with as I'd like a bigger property, but know that I'm likely to be working in the city for another 25 years (so it just doesn't stack up). I've found the balance by getting an acre 23km out of Brisbane.

My requirements are a garage, a basement, and a sunny backyard. Our lot is 3/4 acre, and we don't use the front yard for anything and the backyard could be 1/2 the size and still allow us to do all the things we do now (play soccer with the dogs, sit out on the deck, grow plants with AP). A 1/2 acre sunny fenced back yard and no front yard would be enough I think for us if we moved. Our house started out as 1800 sq ft but since then I've finished the basement and if it was just the "core" (wife, me, 6 year-old) the house would be way too big. We currently have three exchange students, 18 year-old stepson, and sometimes his girlfriend, and over the holidays his girlfriend's family was staying with us too (mom, three daughters, and baby boy). I would like a smaller house, smaller family, and smaller commute!

I live in Narangba about 40k north of the city and about a 1 1/2 hr commute. 10 acres may be hard to find, 5 acres is common but I would suggest places like Dayboro and Wamuran which are quite rural and parts of Burpengary and Eumundi.
