Post subject:  Visit to Australia

I have decided to make a trip to Australia to try and see as many of the AP systems there as I can squeeze in. We plan to fly to Perth on about 10 September 2008 and then hire a car and drive to Ballarat to see family and friends there and then Melbourne and Sydney. My wife wants to run the Sydney Marathon on the 21 September (I'll just wait for her and drink beer) and then fly to NZ to see friends there.

Our currency is worthless (currently R7.25 to the AUS$) so we are on a very tight budget and would appreciate anyone who could put us up in a spare room, tent, garage, couch for a night or two in these (or any other towns). I would gladly put up an AP'ers visiting South Africa in return.

Any suggestions for the itinerary, accomodation, travel arrangements etc would be appreciated as we have haven't been to Oz yet.

Cheers

Would gladly put you up in Kal Synapto - you are aware that ballarat is almost 4 days drive from perth?

Kal is a good first stop from perth :)

Edit - If you need a two man tent for the trip across the nullabor (good time of year for camping) you can have ours. Leave it somewhere in melbourne and we can pick it up in Jan :)

And that you could fly from perth to melbourne, buy a cheap car to drive to Ballarat and still have change in what you'd spend on driving over ;)

then drive it from melbourne to sydney, thats only 900kms ;)

We've only got the liberal government to blame for that

SM, if you decide to fly to Melbourne, try http://www.tigerairways.com/ they can be pretty cheap compared to some of the others (very no frills)

It would have been great if you'd been here in July ;)

Or fly from Perth to Adelaide and hire a car from here for the drive east. That'll save you about 3 and a half days driving.
