Post subject:  Recumbent Trikes
I am seriously considering a trike to commute around Toowoomba. I currently ride a mountain bike with clip-ins, but have found it very embarrassing when I forget to disconnect my feet BEFORE stopping at the red light. Also, on a more practical note, the old arthritis makes it very painful to ride more than about 5 klms without painkillers, which can't be good for you. These little beauties are like pedalling a recliner! Anyone else interested???

Now thats my kind of exercise. I like it. Seems like it may be harder for cars to see you. I would want red flags and such.

What does something like that cost?

An arm and a leg..... but that's cool.... you only need one arm to steer them and one leg to pedal them :lol:

The novelty factor ensures that most cars notice and give a wide berth. It's always the one that doesn't that gets you. You have to be cautious, like all bike riders should, and don't do anything ridiculous. Costs from AUD $1600 up depending on options and brand. Slightly more than your average treadlie. Has the big advantage of not far to fall if you stuff up, which I tend to do often. Most recent was into a large rose bush when I forgot to unclip to open the gate.

What sort of clips do you have on the current bike snag? I always found proper clips, rather than toe clips to be no problem. A slight twist of the ankle and your foot is off the pedal.

'Aint that the truth. I tend to ride on the bike paths here, or plan my route carefully and avoid narrow roads. We have a reasonable bike pathway in Toowoomba, gets me where I need to go, but Canberra is GREAT. Two of my kids live there and the bike paths go everywhere.

But you gotta admit that this is good for you, and good for the planet, both of which are in line with AP ethics.

Unfortunately, my recumbent Logotrike and one-wheel trailer were stolen after 3 years of pleasant riding. At one stage I wanted to follow the example of a couple--friends--who rode theirs around Australia in '02-'03. I found the recumbent much better for a sore back and the rest of traffic seemed quite respectful. Cleats are appropriate, to allow all of the legs to exercise. I'll follow your progress with great interest and not a little nostalgia, SNAG.

Thanks Adrian. I'm really needful of back support and a trike looks the ticket. I will be in Canberra in about a month to visit the kinder, so I am looking to test ride and probably buy then. There is next to nothing shopwise up here in Qld, certainly nothing in Toowoomba. There are good bike shops, but they don't stock recumbents. "If you want to buy a particular model, then we'll get it in for you, after you pay a deposit" type of response. Oh, and service it, too!
That is a real bummer, Adrian, having it stolen. Did you ever consider getting another?

I hear that there is an optional bazooka you can buy to deal with SUVs that get too close...

Yeah, hee hee, not hard to tell!!! I have ridden motorcycles and bicycles since I was 10, so I understand, I mean really understand!!! I want to look at super bright lights for night as I will be traveling a bit then, being a shift worker.
