It is sitting on 39C here, and I have just received an RFS message - another out of control fire in my watch zone.

Definitely not getting enough sleep- too hot overnight and usually can't open the windows due to the smoke.
Forecast is low 40s to high 30s then back to low 40s for the next week... like it has been for the past month or more- way above average record highs.

Pyrocumulonimbus storm producing lots of lightning from 25km and further to my east at the moment.
I'm just starting to hear the thunder now.

Not sure how accurate this graphic is - i thought the Northern Territory (at the top middle) was getting lots of rain but maybe it is. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Surrounded by fires here, 3 within about 10km, and a whole lot more out to 40km. The smoke is choking, I wear a mask outside much of the time, but have been staying inside mostly. A fair bit of that time is checking the fire maps, where lightning strikes are happening, and looking out the windows for any new close sources of smoke, at least when it is clear enough to see more than a couple of kilometres. Those dry storms with the pyrocumulonimbus thunder and lightning shows are scary AF. We had a few of those that started new fires everywhere the lightning hit. We had 3 weeks of watching fires 24/7 on shifts of 3 hours on, 3 off overnight. Have you downloaded the Scanner or 5-0 Radio app so you can listen to the local RFS comms? I'm SE of Tamworth. I was searching around online for RFS comms the other day, but didn't find anything that covered this area. Coastal, and inland central and southern areas yes, but not here. I do watch a lightning tracker that shows CGs when storms are around, so I know where to look locally for new fires. Lots of strikes within a few km of home 2 nights ago and some a bit further out last night, fortunately none of the very close ones started fires. I've got watch zones on Fires Near Me, but find the app is often poorly coordinated and inconsistent, with whole large fires often disappearing for up to a couple of days before reappearing.

Wow... hard to comprehend. We've had bad wildfires in areas of the US fairly regularly the past several years, but the numbers I've seen in brief googling show that this is way worse than anything we've ever had here... and of course I live in the frozen north so we rarely get wildfires in this part of the country to begin with (some in forest land in the upper peninsula but nothing near me). I do work for Spartan Motors, in the Firetruck side of the business, so I try to keep an eye on the news for fire related items but hard to imagine how bad it is over there... The news reports here have pretty poor coverage... last night news all they showed was some woman yelling at the prime minister for going on vacation to Hawaii and not funding the RFS but that's about it...

It's pretty grim, the military are doing major evacuations in Victoria from a town cut off by the fires- thousands of people had to shelter on the beach a few nights ago, and a number of entire towns are emptying ahead of the expected conditions today. It has been a brutal fire season so far. Hope everyone is doing ok after the latest burst of crappy fire weather.

just shocking..... Take care everyone.... I've been glued to the ABC news and online sources for days now watching it all unfold.... I'm about to head down to the south west of w.a. where I have family for a few days and I see that this area is also at very high risk of fire, I guess it's only a matter of time before a similar thing happens down there. With a bit of luck there will be some fallout for the dodgy politicizing that's been going on..
