OK, that's what I think happened. So now maybe one of you folks can explain what really happened...

I'm in the Waikato region of NZ at present. It rained for near 2 days solid.

At the very start of the rain Black Dog had thrown her bucket over and given it a bit of a chew. I half filled it with water and put it back out for her.

Yesterday, after approx 36 hours I went out and looked in the bucket. It was nearly full. It had about a dozen worms in it. Common garden variety, not tigers. They are all young. 5 cm's maximum length size. Most of them had full stomachs.

Where did they come from????

was the bucket anywhere near a downpipe or a gutter overflow?
I have found earthworm in gutters before, not quite the item you expect to find up at roof level, but there they were in a clogged up gutter living in fantastic compost...

Had you used the bucket for transporting worm castings, which would have eggs? 5cm in 36h would be pretty decent growth from eggs though

The down pipe could be it. It was within 6 inches of the bucket.

My aunt claims they climbed in the bucket. With the slant, slope, and height, I doubt this, but she is older, and therefore wiser...

Joel has in system worms in his beds. They'd need to be good climbers to get in there but can't have come down in the rain he has a roof.
