I thought I'd point out something I noticed last night.
Since we share common interests, many forum members and users find themselves visiting the same websites, forums, facebook pages, etc.

When I was on facebook, a status appeared on my newsfeed from a group I am a member of, I immediately recognised the profile pic of a fellow forum member who had commented on the status. So without meaning to, I'd identified them which got me thinking.

Maybe most people don't mind it but I'd recommend using different profile pics on forums and FB if you don't want people to work out your name and heaps of other info about you.
At least make your profile 'friends only' so your life history isn't so easily found. (Having a public profile just isn't a great idea to begin with).

Perhaps I'm a bit over cautious but I've encountered a nutter or two in my time online and sure as hell didn't want them finding out where I live or work or who my friends and family are...

Like I say it might be a non issue for you, most of you are probably aware and make decisions based on your personal care factor but if you weren't aware I thought I should give a heads up.

I'm a bit screwed then!

But to be perfectly honest, I think the days of online privacy were over since Facebook got popular and wouldn't sign people up with a username.

My opinion on the matter is, don't post anything online you don't want to world to see. Including pictures and the like on facebook, because Facebook is bound to at some stage in the future change all the privacy settings again, and put everything into the public (has happened before). And everything else they are already selling to ad agencies and making a fortune from it.

It's only going to get worse in the future as well. 15-20 years ago, if you told somebody you were putting pictures up on a notice board for masses of people to see, they'd have had a heart attack. Now I've got friends on facebook that are posting pictures mid labour (weird people, but still).

In another 20-30 years, when we have implants inside our head, or contact lenses that hook up to a advanced phone, and walk past some random person on the street, we'll probably know the last time they went to the toilet.

To see a mildy weird thing, if anybody has an android phone, click on here:

And before it gets anti google-data horders, Apple is doing the exact same thing, just not telling you about it.

It's the way the world is going, just don't put anything onto a public forum you don't want the world to see.

...EDIT....

And I should add, I've had real life stalkers (yes, that is plural) before. Everything from setting boyfriends against me because they think I'm screwing their girlfriend, or slitting their wrists while I'm looking at them on a webcam because I wouldn't get into a relationship with them. So I know the dangers.

I'd recognize you anywhere Bodgy... Stout muscular frame, rather high pants, and a devilishly bushy mustache...

Though seriously, we are living in an ever changing world in so many ways.. Years back when they showed the segment of my yard on gardening Australia I had one guy knock on my door a few days later. He took note of my name from the show, looked me up in the phone book, and just came to see me out of the blue.. After being online for quiet a while now in so many places, I realize that my privacy is rather limited.. Still, I'll fix that soon, travelling in a bus with no fixed address.. :D

Lay down the rubber road, ride to freeeedom!
Go nuts and build a mobile AP system.
NFT on the roof under 'glass', c'mon it'd be great.

Doesn't sound weird to me, it's just the way I like it!

It gives you the option to turn it on and off. Your's must be turned off.

Mine tells me everywhere I've been for the last few years. Down to the minute where I've stopped.

Actually fun to watch my progress on my Euro trip a few years back.

Indeed it is, one of the first things I did when I bought the phone 2 years ago.

I like having clearly defined patterns. It makes it easier to remember what to avoid when "they" are after me... It is like my mom always said, it is not paranoia if someone is actually after you.
I am mostly joking

Email and Phone calls are definitely not private. Posts are not private (but weren't meant to be). Ever notice how companies loose all their customer info to some hacker? I wonder how many don't even know they've been hacked? Then of course lets not assume that Corporations are benevolent organizations in the first place.

Yep
Oops we "lost all our info to a hacker". Who knew if they deposit that amount in our account the back door opens. :dontknow:

Don't forget when you take a pic with your phone and some newer digital cameras they add location data to the metadata connected to the pic.
Actually it's probably on a lot of the pics on this forum.
Those that are clever enough to know where to look can find out exactly in the world you were standing when you took the pic you just added to your face book page.

Talking of face book you don't even need a page of your own to be on it.
I know of a young woman who's "friend" innocently put her and her kids on face book, within hours her physically abusive ex husband turned up and beat her up.
Caused her all sorts of problems.
He knew how to read the meta data on the pic.
Be safe out there.

You can turn phone photo location data off easily enough.

Some clown started a farcebook page in my name a few years ago, just so he could post a (pretty crappy) photo of one of the comets I've discovered.
Getting FB to remove it involved me telling them all my details, which I have no intention of doing, so AFAIK, the page is probably still there.

Yes it can be turned off but a lot of people don't know how.
And an update of firm whare can turn it back on ( found out when I did it)

As for false face book, I believe that kids have done the same thing as syberbulying.
They put up a face book page of their victim with all sorts of damming likes and pics ( probably photoshopped ) of them in difficult to explain places or acts. Of course this is impossible for the poor victim to remove or even disprove it is them.
And I thought the bullying I went through was tough.
