Pretty sure it's a moth cocoon, looks a lot like a silkworm moth to be honest.
Mainly hoping that it isn't full of spiders...
Has anyone got an idea what it could be?
The twiggy thing is just a piece of wire.

I'd say some sort of spider egg cluster. Spiders are generally good to have, they eat other less desirable bugs!

I don't mind spiders, have a few choice 'pet' Golden Orbs around the place. Much to everyone else's dismay.
Not so keen on hundreds of baby spiders spilling out beside my back door though.
Might put it in a jar to see what happens.

Yep, definitely golden orb eggs a google search says.
No so keen, already have a pretty good orb spider sanctuary going on around here.
