hi all,

i'm happy to say that today was the start of my aquaculture course. i was given the tour and have to say i'm stoked. i think i will learn a number of things that should help the ap community.

i was talking to the lecturer about getting some fingerlings, and to my joy was told i can have the ones i rear. on the menu for breeding are black brim. i may even have a few left over which i can pass on to others here.

i will endeavor to put the info i gather onto these forums for others to use.

was funny when they showed us the library and there on the display shelf was the book. i had a little chuckly to myself. your work sure is doing the rounds joel. well done mate.

this is gonna be a hell of a ride.

Hey not fair BF... we don't want any "real" experts on this forum, well apart from EB... LOL

Hope you enjoy your journey mate and look forward to your posts

Well done BF, I am sure you will enjoy the course. Are you doing it at Challenger TAFE?? I started my study there but finished it elsewhere.

thanks for the comments.

as mentioned by troutman its at challenger tafe in fremantle.

all i can say is the hatchery looks awesome. apparently its one of if not the biggest in australia.

today i prepared my tank for growing of black brim larvae.

hopefully i can get a decent amount to survive. if i do then i will have paid for my fees with money i would have otherwise spent on fingerlings.

do you know tony troutman?

Is Gavin Sarre still lecturing there? He used to work at Murdoch Uni with my uncle. He is very tall.

How long does the course go for? How much time does it take up a week? Full Time?

good to see someone else interested.

finished first semester of the certificate. am currently on hiatus for the next year studying small business at my local tafe. this is just an excuse to setup my "bio-farm". basically it will revolve around the principals of permaculture but will be more intensive.

i am currently culturing daphnia, copepods and rotifers in an attempt to one day breed fresh water finfish and crustaceans. atm i am using worm castings and ap water to grow algae, which i then feed to the zooplankton. worms are breeding like rabbits and the ap system is in full swing.

the first semester of aquaculture taught me the basics which i have enjoyed putting into action. its good to have a clear understanding of whats required before investing time and money in unsound practices.

i couldn't recommend it enough to those considering aquaculture as a pathway. however i have to warn you the starts are 8:30, which if your not a morning person hurt. a 2 hour bus trip to get there means 6am wake up. add daylight savings to this and no air con and you may understand my i'm on hiatus. don't get me wrong the course itself was great but it was a tough road.

i got a lot out of it.

Bio Farmer, I think what you are doing is exciting. I wish I could take a straight aquaculture course here, but the only place it is offered is through undergraduate and graduate programs at universities.

You have to be a bloody engineer or biotechnician just to learn how to raise fish around here.

Great to hear an update from you...please keep them coming :D
