Total dead higher, last count somewhere near 7 or 9, depending on what source you listen to.

Minneapolis Fire Chief said that he was suprised that more were not injured or killed.

The blaming game has already started. As early as 1990 there were inspection reports that said the bridge had defects that needed to be addressed. The question now is whether or not those defects were sufficient to have caused the collapse. Evidently something did, but I doubt it was the workman with a jack hammer. (Sort of like a toddler with a rubber hammer destroying a locomotive. Could happen, but not probable.)

Un-believeable tragedy, but perhaps some good can come of it. Other state governors are already ordering every bridge inspected. Maybe another disaster can be averted.

They already have lists of unsafe infrastructure in the US, but it is easier to green light shiny new projects than to maintain old ones.

As with every tragedy, a few profit handsomely and the general public benefits very little.

Thats for sure ems. Clean up will probably cost just as much as building it in the first place did.

Cost estimate, according to an AP story today, is 15 mil in clean up, and 350 mil for construction of a new bridge. "They say" it can be completed by 2009. Yeah, right. If they use some of the questionable supports that were not damaged by the collapse, otherwise figure it as probably being completed in 2012.

It has been done, when they can show that the bridge supports that are still standing are structurally sound and that no shifting occurred due the collapse. Some thing as with the abutments on the banks of the river.

The biggest problem is if they decide to use a different bridge design or construction method, then they have to start over from scratch. Lots more time and money!

Apparently there are 70000 bridges that don't cut the mustard in the US!
Thats a heap of work for concrete repairers.
350m to fix that, wow that is shirt loads!

Drop in the bucket C1.... if the US brought their troops home for a week they'd have that paid for..... and a source of worthwhile labour :D
