I bought one of these today for a friend and being what I am had to try it out. It gives an audible warning tone first then if you keep 'barking' it gives a shock with the tone. Keep on barking (not recommended) and it shocks harder, with 5 levels of shock. Resets if you shut up for a bit. Couldn't get past level 4...  Chickened out big time! I was sure scared to bark again so the bastard thing definitely works. |

Personally I am not a fan of using technology to replace decent training and attention for a dog. Doesn't take much to have an intelligent friend who only barks when there is really something there - and once he gets taught that barking brings pain, who's going to warn the owner that the burglars are coming in? |

I am currently going through the same issue. I had a dog that never barked until someone strange comes to the gate. Now I have neighbours who have dogs that bark all day long and she now wants to join in. How do I get her to stop barking at nuscence dogs, but will scare the bejesus out of an intruder. Dogs are smart enough to know when the collar is off, its okay to bark, so maybe have a collar on her when we are all out. Thing is, I'm never home to see her barking during the day, as I'm not at home to see her, but the good neighbours say she is becoming annoying. Dilema! Want to stay on good side of those neighbours. |

@dr bee - I had a shepherd that started to bark because the neighbour dogs did. I spent some time on weekends or when I was home to go out each time, say "Sssh" and walk him over to where the dogs were barking. I'd look then go "It's OK" and we'd go back to the house. After a few days he would just ignore them. Not sure if it would work for all dogs - he was exceptional. It was also how I taught him not to bark at night - get up, go out and walk him around and reassure him. Then for a while I could "just call out "It's OK" and he'd quieten down. After a couple of weeks if he barked I knew someone was either in the yard or had maybe stopped at the gate. |

Cheers Journeyman, sometimes its the simple things. I'll give that a go. She's pretty smart, Kelpy/staffy cross. Loves to chase a ball. Ignors all other dogs when we go out if I have the ball. They are like kids, love a bit of attention, a good hug and a play and they're good. |
