You're on the money BF. Seems to be a major re-vamp and spring clean going on throughout the whole forum.... probably most noticable when you go to the portal page. |

A while back the forum was split into formal and informal areas because a few people were upset about their threads being filled with banter. The reason for going back to how it was is two-fold: 1. The formal area was not heavilly used and people were sometimes scared to post things there. 2. The main reason is that the main people who were conplaining about the banter have now gone away. |

Yep.... VB pretty much covered it... If people have suggestions on simple ways to improve the forum, and ways to make information easier to find we'd love to hear them.. The idea to have the condensed members system threads with the short description of each system, 3 photos and a link to their complete system thread, was a great idea, this really helps people get an idea of the different system people have without wading through the daunting number of posts on some threads.. If people have other ways they can think of to improve things around here, please speak up... I'd like to try and create some sub categories under the main sections, like in the fish area, so that if people are looking for specific info on fish diseases, they can go straight to the fish problem section for example.. Every now and then the moderators can go through the general sections and move any specific thread into a corresponding sub section, if there is one that suits it. |

Because you asked...... I have always envisioned having a thread where the threads are hidden underneath the posts. You could click on expand or show comments and it will show the posts by other members. You can flag these comments so any truly important post will be included in the main thread. I think a huge and easily to search FAQ would be ideal. Flag posts that have very good answers to common questions and include them in a big database. Have a huge list of common questions in different categories. This then links to a single post(s) or thread(s). The search function in all huge forums is too difficult to The other possibility is giving the author of a thread more power over the threads such that they can tidy up their own threads. eg. It might be interesting to have a hierarchy of messages in a topic -- for example: banter about toes could be hidden below a post with a picture -- ready to be expanded if someone is interested. That way if a moderator or topic starter wanted to take the time, he (or she) could pull the most important posts to the top so a newbie would be greeted with a page or two of pictures and cogent text and could dig deeper into AP discussion, brainstorming, banter, foolishness... if time or inclination permitted. |

FAQ on AP is definately needed.. Giving others rights to edit their threads? Difficult but perhaps possible... So far as moving posts around in a thread, up and down in the list, or making some invisible, I'm not sure whether the the software can do it... That type of thing was sort of the idea behind the fpormal area, to move threads into there and delete all the crap pout of it, while leaving the original with all the fluff... Didn;t really work, I don;t think we could make a copy of a thread and delete bits off one of them.. |

I agree beeso, and it is being done now... The way VB posted his system in the sticky thread for members medium size systems is an excellent example of how to post a system. HE gives a very descriptive account with chronological links to his thread. http://www.backyardaquaponics.com/forum ... php?t=1618 The ONLY thing I would add is a link to a photo album so that the viewer could see detalied photos beyond the three that are posted. However, I believe that is already possible, just noone has done it yet? |
