So I know aquaponics is exciting and addictive, but why did you get started with AP? For me, politics played a key role. I see the economy going nowhere. Inflation is present in fuel and food! When I came across AP, it was like a sign from GOD! I want to be prepared for bad times ahead. So did you think about that when you started?

I started cos I was jacked off with trying to grow veggies in a beach with arid climate! |

I think when the bad times ahead hit you better have a good supply of fish food on hand. I like aquaponics but the reliance on electricity and a constant supply of fish food has put me off starting anything as a measure against SHTF. I would like to take it up in order to produce some food less saturated in pesticides and fertilisers though. |

I start AP because I have water restriction in my state (was lifted) and I want to grow fish but I don't have a the land to make a big pond. Now I became additive, always busy with the system to improve here, expand there... Cheers, Long. |

it all started as a love for fancy lettuce and a hate for sand! so i started growing hydroponic lettuce which was very good however there is the issue of cost for food. i made a very small system and it was costing $2-$5 a week in fertilizer for a few lettuces & a tomato plant! my aquaponics system is too small at the moment to grow lettuce as it has too much stuff in it as it is. also i have to do some redesigning when i get the space. (buy a house) seamed like fun at the time. then the cabbage moths came! dun dun dun!!!! |

I liked gardening, but would always have trouble keeping the plants watered in summer. I also wanted to grow some protein, but was not quite ready for chickens. AP solves both needs! Plus, I like having some degree of self-sufficiency as a matter of principle. I'm not aiming to fill all my food requirements at the moment, but it's nice to at least pick a killer salad every few days. |

Yes, self sufficiency was a big part of my reason also. I also hope to start raising rabbits for meat by next winter. I'm afraid chickens might disturb the neighbors!
