Howdy folks. This is just a dream, but the family & I always talk about saving up some money and going on a surf trip, outside of US territory. We've always talked about these 2 places, Brisbane mainly because I know someone there, and SA because I've heard theres some awesome yet not huge waves (no, we're not pros!) Any surfers here? Any opinions?

Come to Western Australia, and on your way to Margret River (for the best surfing in Australia) you can stop by the BYAP shop for a squizz.

Margaret River, yallingup is prob the best WA has to offer. Most of the northern beaches of NSW up to Byron Bay like Manly and Palm beach. Queensland's Snapper rocks at Rainbow bay or the point break at Noosa are pretty cool. And of course Torquay, Bells Beach in Vic.

Or you could come down the south coast of NSW.... and choose between about a hundred different breaks within a couple of hundred kilometers...

From point breaks... Werri Point (hometown)...

Nice pics! We'd probably want a sand break. My wife wont even go out if its reef break. My son will go out, but he's not too comfortable out there. Here in Luquillo we have La Pared and La Selva, but the best surfing is on the west coast of the island, in the towns of Rincon and Aguadilla. You can see a daily report on rinconsurfreport.com. right now its just about the size we like, but in November it gets huge. thanks for the tips!

Just down the road... is Gerroa/Seven Mile beach... plenty of sand breaks... it's where they hold the "surf camp" and "learn to surf" sessions for all the backpackers....

Really kid friendly beach...

If you want a real adventure... not just for the surfing... come to WA and go North!

Hire a camper van and head north to Gnarloo and then Yardie Creek on the North West Cape. Yardie is about 1300K's North of Perth. At times Gnarloo has some of the best small waves you're ever going to see, but neither are sand breaks. Along the trip North there are also some good surfing spots. If you are going to do it, pencil it in for April-October... it gets a tad warm up there Nov-March, and it's cyclone season, so you could get stranded for days.

While there you'll be able to:

- See Ningaloo Reef, the largest fringing reef in the world. In places it's only 100m from shore and you can snorkel it safely.

- Swim with Whale Sharks.

- Surf warm water with no Great Whites... only Tigers!

- Experience some of the greatest fishing ever.

...or you could surf Scabs (Scarborough beach), a sand break right here in the middle of the Perth metro area.

I used to live on Stanley st in Scarborough. Scabs is too overcrowded these days if you ask me. But yea, nice breaks from trigg through to North beach. Ive read somewhere that scabs and trigg are 2 of the most hazardous beaches of WA and accounts for 50% of all life rescues across the west coast. Id imagine it would be due to the thick waves falling on the heavy bar causing rip channels.

The best thing about scabs is the talent on the beach... :headbang:
