Can't sleep, so I'm thinking about a sideways AP insomnia thing.

Q: Would you doom yourself, your children, your grandchildren, your great-grandchildren, and your great-great children to living on a spaceship for their entire lives if the nations of Earth could make a multi-generational starship that could take humans to a habitable exoplanet say 5 light years from Earth?

Q: How would you design the bioshelter/biosphere/ecosystem that could support say 100 humans without external inputs other than electricity?

I was thinking this would be similar to a small Pacific island, with enough pigs, chickens, goats, and fish, and fruit and vegetables to keep 100 people alive for several generations. It would also be philosophically kind of similar to people leaving England to go to Australia or wherever and never coming back, until say their grandchildren had an opportunity to return.

I would be in but doubt I could put up with my son asking "are we there yet" every couple of minutes.

As long as their is a Backyard Aquaponics forum I should be okay, but then it would have to be called Starship Aquaponics.

What sort of entertainment will be available on board?

I think there will always be people willing to go on an expedition like this but since it is multi generational I wonder how the next generation will react when they view footage of life on Earth?

Although the crew would not have to worry about trying to earn a living so it would be like living in a really big mansion.

It would be like living in a giant mansion that is eden like with everything you need to survive.

If it is possible to create such a ship why couldn't that be done here on Earth for everyone?

Perhaps if the technology is so advanced by this stage there will already be true virtual reality so you can experience just about anything you desire from the comfort of your starship pod.

Will we be issued with lazer guns and jet packs?

If yes = *arm pumps* ... "cool, thanks... see you on board Captain DD."

If no = *checks watch* ... "ahh look at that.... gotta go.. hmm ... hey, mash is on tv"

The stuff I was seeing on the Internet was talking about city-sized groups of people. I think that since humanity has been through bottlenecks of 150 or less before (supposedly for the ones who crossed into N America) and especially if you could keep sperm and egg banks of tons of people on board for later then you wouldn't need a city, more like a village in transit.

Maybe start with a big cylindrical gravel bed , enriched with the remains of say 100x the biomass you want living at any given time. So take a small island now and soak 100x that biomass into the bed? A big grow light at the axis of the cylinder that moves across the axis over a day.

I read somewhere that old technologies do not go extinct, so I imagine the people would have everything from stone age tech to information age tech, education would be very important so that the pioneers would be able to disembark successfully and be able to handle non-ideal situations. The in between generations might become too lazy to be "doers", maybe they would refuse to settle the new place when they get there?

Civilization started with stone age technology, agriculture, and irrigation. It would require some magic to maintain space age and information age stuff using robots and micro-fabrication, but if the people could land successfully and the place wasn't totally hostile then maybe...
