When we look at the moon from Earth we always see the same side of the moon which would have to mean that one period of orbit is equal to one period of rotaion.

What are the chances of this occuring naturally?

Could there be something on the other side of the moon that we are not meant to see?

Mantis if it did not rotate as it obits then wouldn't we see a different side depending on which part of earth we are?

In order to see the same side of the moon it has to rotate once every orbit.

If you put an orange on the table and move a grape around it but don't rotate it, then you will see the opposite side of the grape from opposite sides of the orange.

The moon takes one period of orbit around the Earth to rotate once.

I think it got locked somehow, called tidal locking or something. It does seem pretty interesting, I wonder if other moons in the solar system are locked like that, probably not since they orbit much bigger planets. If only there was a way to "goggle" this or something to find out. Paranoid much?

:drunken: I had comments on what is on the other side of a Moon but I decided against compromising my previous comments on private schooling.( I do so love good old poo and wee jokes though)
