G'Day Gang,
I have set myself a challenge to see if I can remove all artificial flavours, colours, additives and preservitives from my diet. I will also take all vegetable oils apart from Extra Virgin Olive and Coconut oils out of diet. This will eliminate about 99% of what is on the supermarket shelves.
Why the diet change?
A couple of books I have read that have influenced my decision.

"Deep Nutrition" Why Your Genes Need Traditional Food. By Catherine and Luke Shanahan ISBN-10: 0-615-22838-0 or eBook ISBN: 978-1-61397-266-3

"Fats that Heal Fats that Kill" By Udo Erasmus. ISBN 978-0-920470-38-1

Also a book called "Lard" The Lost Art of Cooking with Your Grandmother's Secret Ingredient http://www.LardCookbook.com

Maybe it will help keep me alive a bit longer or at least I will drop off the perch very happy :) :)

That does sound like a challenge Curnow, does that mean no butter or is there an alternative?
I have made butter from cream, not that long ago, or do you have to go further back than that.
Give us a few ideas on what you will be eating and what we take for granted that is now out of the question.

Good luck! It'll be tough but well worth it! :)

I've been attempting to cut all that stuff out of my diet to help reduce some symptoms of some medical conditions... I haven't been very successful as I am working two jobs at the moment, and its so easy to put a microwave meal in the microwave after 17 hour days!

That's why I can't wait to have my system set up! It'll be much easier (and rewarding) to pick some veggies and have a salad! Not bother to have to go to the shops...

Charlie, surely he could have something fermented ... I mean, fermentation is a natural process, isn't it... maybe just an excuse to set up a home brewery! :p

He only said vegetable oils Faye, that leaves it wide open for animal derived oils (particularly with the reference to the lard cooking book)

I have my first batch of Kombucha about ready and a pretty fine splendid home made Shiraz 2010/11 to take care of the kicking back side of things. We actually don't buy too much from the supermarket now apart from dunny paper, Greek Yoghurt and Capel butter. All our greens come from our garden and our meat comes from Tony's House of meats. (Organic and Free Range) I have just sourced some free range pig fat to make lard. We have been making good use of the slow cooker over the cool months with ox tail, lamb neck (cut into 4-5 pieces), soup bones and vegetable stews. We have a small grain mill so we will make our own flour when I find a good source of organic grains.

The deep nutrition looks interesting, I was having a discussion along these lines with Faye the other day. With the majority of the bodies cells being replaced every 7-10 years or so, then we really are what we eat. Fresh healthy food is how the body repairs and heals any damage.

Since replacing about 50-70% of my diet with raw foods I can say that I haven't felt as good in many, many years. Other foods that I eat, I try to replace with the healthiest options when possible. Have you tried Pure Life breads? http://purelifebakery.com/ Great stuff, biodynamic/organic breads made from sprouted grains. Not cheap at about $10 a loaf, but a loaf weighs over 1kg and it lasts for ages. The ingredients are pretty crazy, a standard loaf contains sprouted biodynamic wheat and filtered water.. That's it... Some of their other loaves they do are nice, with dates and walnuts in them as well..

Havn't tried PureLife but have been getting Bodhi's http://www.bodhi.com.au/ sprouted breads for quite a while. The plus for them is that they are local so very few food miles. :thumbright:

You're gonna need more food in the house when you start on the Kombucha tea, your appetite will soar... and don't go anywhere that has chocolates in full view, supermarket checkouts etc. I was put onto Kombucha tea many years ago and the person that got me onto it warned me about chocolate cravings... I thought they were exaggerating... they weren't!

Not sure, but if you find out, someone was also asking in this thread viewtopic.php?f=1&t=13567&p=348267&hilit=lecithin#p348267
