If you want a more efficient means of communicating then try SkyPE. Its a free Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) program that allows users to transfer files, send chat messages, make free computer-to-computer telephone calls and video conferencing. Its free to download and free to use (to make computer-to-computer calls. You can also make cheap computer-to-telephone and computer-to-mobile phone calls by purchasing SkyPE Credit).

If you just want to use the text messaging, you do not any more equipment than your computer and an internet connection. To use voice chat, all you need is a fast internet connection (better than 56Kbps or better, the faster the better the quality), a microphone (mine cost me $2) and your PC speakers. (Some people prefer to use a headset which costs just a little more). For video, of course you need a camera!

I recommend you try SkyPE. You can download it for free from http://www.skype.com

I do not work for SkyPE or get any royalties from them; I just LOVE their product and find it an invaluable tool for me to conduct my business and stay in touch with my friends all over the world, for free.

I agree it is a very useful tool. In the past I've used it when I was doing consulting work, and even some video production work. It's gotten very popular with television production as well. Opra, Ellen and the major news networks use it too.

Skype annoys me most of the time.......

But then any software that defaults to "I will start up when you boot your computer" annoys me.. Plus the fact that when you tell it to close, it minimizes and you have to "right click" and quit it.. Close is meant to be close, not I'm going to shrink down here and keep running in the background... Then you arrive at work the next day and 2-3 people have sent you half a dozen messages thinking your on line..

The other day I tried to send a file of less than 1MB to someone via skype and it failed to send 3 times after sitting waiting for ages as it transferred very slowly. Gave up and emailed it through in a flash..

Great idea and all, and I know a lot of people love it.. My brother uses it all the time for video chatting to his family when he's away, but it seems every time I use it, I end up annoyed by some aspect. :dontknow:

How could they sellout like that? I finally got tired and switched to Lynux when I lost 4TB of information and about $10,000 worth of software. :(

A friend of a friend was on the original development team from all those years ago, and is now very wealthy!

The last few MS "updates" have been annoying, but, whilst it's still free, I guess I shouldn't complain too much? I have started to revert to using FTP for file transfers in lieu of Skype or email.
