Steve,

Quote:
shower bath is actually considered black water, as is kitchen sink..................

is that in Victoria? In WA kitchen & toilet are black water. Bathroom, laundry are grey water.

only subsurface or sub-mulch application is allowed in order to limit the chance of contacting pathogens. Shouldn't be used on vegies - especially root veges or leaf vegies for consumption raw.

now you got me thinking. i might be wrong about the shower / bath.

i know kitchen is.

when i get around to setting up a system i'd like to have it in bathroom and kitchen with a push to divert button (timed).

majority of my kitchen water goes to rinsing of foods and the lightly soiled things like chopping board for herbs and veg. I assume that the black water classification is due to the possible contamination from raw meats and the like?

same goes for the bathroom, i'd prefer not to divert soapy water, but i'd like the provision to divert when running water.............

pipe dreams............

More than a year ago I 'seeded' my pond with bathwater. The goldfish never minded.

If I ever build an outdoor kitchen I will have two adjacent sinks, plumbed separately - one for rinsing and thus okay for grey-water recovery.

Getting something like this allowed by a local council (if that's important to you) will depend on their by-laws, their interpretation of the state's health laws relating to grey water, and maybe how the council officer who checks the system feels on the day.

To my knowledge, health departments reign supreme on what is legal. Even if you're outside WA or aren't interested in health laws as such the links on the following page is useful.

http://www.health.wa.gov.au/envirohealt ... ywater.cfm

The first in for the WA health department's code of practice for gw reuse, some info in there about - for example - types of diversion systems, typical gw composition, percentage breakdown of household consumption, faecal contamination levels in bath/shower water....

Another links is to a list of gw re-use systems that you can buy which are permitted in WA - a good starting point to see what is out there.

for greywater, I go for low sodium. As I use a phosphate containing fertiliser in the garden, I don't mind having it in my washwater also.

check your powder/liquid here.
