Peak oil is dependent on the stupidity of society, and especially in OZ.
One of the least populated countries in the world with some of the richest resources especially energy, so what do we do?
Congregate round the fringes, use shitloads of energy transporting people and goods in traffic jams. Put people in rabbit sized houses/blocks with the associated problems. Landfill plastics, for the most part (they can be reused or turned back into oil or burnt as a higher source of energy than oil), not that we need to do the latter or even the former.
Change the way or place we live and industries and we are sweet, will we do it NO.

Very true!

Just read this entire thread.. :P

All the peak oil predictions cannot possibly take technological advances into account.

Running out of oil will happen a lot slower than people think.

We can also count on the incredibly imaginative members who make up the market to continuously improve what we have and come up with cost effective solutions, as long as the government doesn't intervene too much...

So EB, does that mean the only solution is to harvest the phosphates from human waste before we dump it into the oceans? If so it will probably be done once it's economically viable. It's too good a resource to go un-noticed for long.

I might stake a mining claim on the site of our local sewage treatment works just to make a point.

Come to think of it, that might actually work. People staking mining claims in this country have special rights. Apparently (I love that word because now I get to say what ever I want) some people trying to get the rights to do some geothermal energy extraction were meeting a bit of resistance. They tried to argue that pulling energy from the ground should come under the mining act using E=mc^2 as their argument.

Their old science teachers would be proud.

True or not, I don't care.

That and the idea of marketing sea monkeys simply make me happy :)

Peak oil or any other commodity is not the problem. Availability of credit to both produce and purchase these commodities of need is the real threat. 20-25% of wheatbelt farmers will fail to get finance to plant a crop this year. The credit crunch is biting at profitability of producing everything. In the end shortages of essential commodities like energy and food will come from a lack of credit, not from a lack of resources to extract or produce them.

How will this impact aquaponics? Fish meal prices will continue to move painfully higher. General running costs will move higher. Initial setup costs could be higher as well.

I'm not sure how $10,000/t for fish pellets comes from a $2,000/t price for fishmeal. Why are we not substituting more cheap grains into rations to stretch the fishmeal out further and decrease feeding costs?

I'm not sure where you get your figures from, $10,000 a ton? Because little people like us don't get much of a say in the content of what goes into the feed.. We buy feed by the pallet, pretty much every single month, probably close to half a ton a month, but we are only a small consumer.

There is still plenty of oil left...

Its just not economically viable at the moment...

I prefer renewable energy though for many reasons, one being that it will start a major shift in the public mentality about the way we live. Oh and the environment and all that.... :)

They've just discovered potentially 200+ billion barrels of unconventional shale oil around Coober Peedy (LNC.AX)... we won't run out of oil, just the ability to pay for it.

The company invovled has back tracked rapidly from that reserve suggestion...

More like 2+ billion barrels of easily recoverable shale oil....
