Ha bargain basement! top bracket here is what, 40%

Steve this is on each month salary and even before starting counting end of the years taxes, and at the end of the year you repay taxes on monthly taxes as some of them are not deductible of the year salary.
Try to find better... ;-)

And for the 40 % at the most, we have had it regulated to 55% a year for the richest, it used to go up to 60% last year.

As far as I am aware (few beers) income tax was imposted to fund the war (Think the first one)

Everyone seems to be worrying about rates. I'd worry more about why we still have it.

Because the politics liked it so much to have everything payed for them that they didn't want to change it as long as nobody was complaining.

Steve, i love that answer... ;-) As you say!

If that is the case - and it may well be, though sounds a bit strange to me - what was funding the gov't and therefore services to the public (hospitals, police etc) before then. Must have been some sort of taxes.

The only tax we should have is sales tax. You earn the money - its yours. You spend it - the gummint gets a bit.

As far as i'm aware, I think that the english brought the tax concept to Australia on the first boat of pioneers. Most of the aussies were living far from town so not paying for sure, so no tax controlers payed to come and get the money, a vicious circle they stopped recently probably.
In europe in the medieval ages, they used to have taxes on all sorts of stuff like on the number of doors and windows in example. There's lots of very old houses with tiny door and windows left from that period.

I've got a different approach OB..... no taxes.... other than a flat rate transaction tax....

Say maybe 2%, or whatever.... payable on every financial transaction....

Everybody pays, no ducking or diving, no rorts, no loopholes....

Small transactions, small tax..... big transactions, big tax.....

Everybody contributes.... personal, corporate, goverment, religion... no exceptions :D

Yep, and the tax act would only be about a couple of pages instead of a couple of books

A guy found that 0.001 % of the total financial transaction throughout all the world would give enough money to feed everybody for free.

Rope: i totally agree about that 2 % tax, it would work wonders.

I also like the idea.
Unfortunately, the people who OWN most of our countries assets also own the government, so it will NOT happen, even if there were a citizen's Referendum that it should be the only tax.

They control the Guvviment, whichever Party is in power, they just let us think that we have a choice of who Governs us at election time, where in reality, it is they who control us all.

I'm getting mizzeruble now!!!
Tony

Modern income tax originated in the U.K. to fund the Napoleonic War. In Australia, the Commonwealth took over the States income tax powers to fund WWII in 1942. Once it had them, there was no way they were giving them back. Besides Income Tax, Capital Gains Tax, GST, Medicare Levy, Stamp Duty, Customs and Excise, Fees and Charges, we're not too bad off. GRIN. It is said that the Australian Tax Act is the largest document in the world. It is so complicated that even the ATO doesn't know what it means. It would be far easier to just charge GST on everything and get rid of exemptions and introduce a low flat rate income tax with no exemptions. Even introduce some form of negative taxation and get rid of all government benefits. Unfortunately all politicians like to have huge surpluses for vote buying before elections.
