hey steem,

sounds like your working for the devil. when you start to have nightmares about it i think its time you got out. knowing that your energy is going into destruction of the ecosystem's must be stressful. by the sounds of it your company shot themselves in the foot by sponsoring this event. how can they sleep at night?

surely there are ethical companies around that put the environment before $.

if not couldn't you start your own company based around building sustainable living systems? there seems to be a trend lately toward sustainability which i'm sure you could tap into. you may make a pittance at first but how much do you really need to live? a sustainable environment? who needs a big screen TV or a fancy car when we're dying?

above all follow your gut. you will regret it if you don't.

it's time for change.

my 2 cents.

i have no right to judge anyone's actions or motives behind them. i am just advocating for the earth. after all i am as guilty as the next person and don't want to be a hypocrite. i should be catching the bus everywhere but i don't. i can go on. we all need to look at our own practices before any one else's. if we did the the world would be a far better place. there would be no need for religion.

enough rant.

Steem,

Went to an urban development institute luncheon yesterday. My company (an engineering consultancy specialising in land development) sponsored the event. The speaker is professor of urban ecology at the uni of south australia, with a background of zoology and ecology.

Have you asked the Executives of your company what they feel about designing into the developments, flora and fauna friendly avenues and drainage sumps?

Perhaps they would be receptive to your ideas and market the developments based on the "earth friendly" design of the development.

Worth a try, nothing to lose except the job which feeds your family ;)

talk to your boss, if he laughs at you then comeback the next day with a shotgun and make him see reason. or threaten to quit, or quit. thousands of jobs out there man.

People are greedy and also skeptical to anything that is open to opinion (ie, environment). we all believe something different no matter how similiar the idea. terrorists fight for what? freedom? the right to believe their god? when is someone going to fight for the earth with brute force, greenpeace do an ok job but most of them are lentil eating hippies and believe in non violent resolutions. I'm not saying blow anything up but I'm sure if you dumped 50 tonne of compost on the front step of parliment house you'd get someones attention it seems to be the only way governments are going to listen. protesting doesn't work, just a bunch of crazy people chanting, no one will listen to you. extremist environmentalists that's what we need... I think I've watched fight club too many times but we need an army to declare war in defence of the environment.

I should clarify. My company is not evil. But they are passive, which is almost as bad. There is no point in quitting for a different company who works the same way, and that is almost all of them. So I'm prepared to be patient until I know what I want and find a company who is aligned with my values to some extent.

I think the biggest problem lies in the lack of regulations requiring

Extremism is not my bag a_z. I think it wastes time and energy and makes people angry and stubborn. But many wiser people than me have been wrong before - I have no doubt that I can be wrong too.

I don't drive a car, don't have a family to feed, and my TV was destined for the dump :) but I am mortgaged to the hilt from buying my AP system (the attached house pushed the price up somewhat ;))

There are some businesses that are evil, some that are ethical and a vast majority who do would like to do the right thing in theory, but in reality will do what they are paid to do rather than try to convince clients that THEY are evil.

One option is to make the business successful enough or capable enough that they can begin to push the design envelope without risking their own livelyhoods, and attract clients who want to create something that is better than average.

Side note - check out www.biocity.edu.au for a look at what the speaker is up to. I've got a copy of the book coming, and I'm going to try to get in touch with them to see if, for the time being, part of my increasingly vanishing spare time can be used to help them out.

This has really helped me to get things a little clearer in my head. And that, friends, is why venting is a good thing ;)

Catching Monkeys
Once upon a time in a village, a man appeared and announced
to the villagers that he would buy monkeys for $10 each.

The villagers seeing that there were many monkeys around,
went out to the forest, and started catching them. The man
bought thousands at $10 and as supply started to diminish,
the villagers stopped their effort.

He further announced that he would now buy at $20. This
renewed the efforts of the villagers and they started
catching monkeys again.

Soon the supply diminished even further and people started
going back to heir farms. The offer increased to $25 each
and the supply of monkeys became so little that it was an
effort to even see a monkey, let catch it!

The man now announced that he would buy monkeys at $50!
However, since he had to go to the city on some business,
his assistant would now buy on behalf of him.

In the absence of the man, the assistant told the villagers.
"Look at all these monkeys in the big cage that the man has
collected. I will sell them to you at $35 and when the man
returns from the city, you can sell them to him for $50
each."

The villagers rounded up all of their savings and bought
all the monkeys.

Then they never saw the man nor his assistant again, only
monkeys everywhere!

Now you have a better understanding of how the stock market
works.

OK

Another interest rate rise by the 'Reserve W ank'.

Dosn't anyone else realise the stupidity of all this?

Policemen, well the vaguely bright ones, look,at the scene of a crime, for who benefits. Well! did the 'common person' benefit; or perhaps 'our government'?

Any guesses?

I wonder how many people understood the subtleties of the feature cartoon in the herald sun today. the faimily living under the brisge in a carboard box. The cardboard box was marked PLASMA TV........................

The banks are trying to suck as many ppl in as poss to a fixed rate!
Then they will drop! and they will have a fixed profit margin for the next 5 years! Currently fixed is cheaper than variable!
