I think Ivan's comments are fair and very useful, these are the sort of questions that have to be asked. And I'm sure there are many Brisbane residents that will be asking this question... Flooded out 30 years ago, flooded out again now, unable to get insurance against flooding because of the high risk, do we build again knowing the risks and the fact that insurance is not really possible?

Well, I don't know,

Didn't they build that big freak'n dam to stop the effects of a water event like 74?but wasn't the water that came into that catchment area this time much, much more than 74? and if it wasn't for that dam the effects of this years flood's would have been far more severe?

I'm only repeating what I have heard, so absolutely, I'm no expert, One thing I know is when mother nature flexes her muscle, it doesn't matter where you are, if you're in the way she'll take you with her, and anything else that happens to be there.

I think there needs to be a balance, sure you should consider leaving and not rebuilding in particular areas, if you can, but you should be guided by the engineers and people that know about these things, you may weigh up the risk and think it is cheap enough to rebuild in a particular area, not be insured, (weather it's available or not) and take the risk of being flooded out every 30 years, that's insurance for you, unfortunately some Brisbane residents have found that out, by way of increased insurance premiums being too expensive for them, not taking the cover out and snap getting hit.

IMHO it certainly is not a nice predicament to be in.

Cheers.

they always say hindsight is 20/20

wivenhoe saved us from being completely wiped from the map. it used every single mm of its flood capacity, and only just emptied the overflow today. what fell in toowoomba is something that they are more used to seeing in the huge gorges south of darwin.

the suggestion that council or state government should do something about flood mitigation is a joke. we have an enormous amount of mitigation in place. its just not possible to protect against everthing. if you had suncorp insurance, your covered, but most people think that a house isnt worth 3k a year in insurance.

perhaps we shouldn't build anywhere. kinglake had fires (as did perth) lets not build there. the east coast floods, don't build there. blue mountains burn, lets not build there. gonna run out of land pretty quickly. what about horsham. just buldoze it and move on? pretty easy to say from the other side of the country.
