VB.... probably more a "adware/spyware" problem.... install Spybot and run it....

If AVG reports a virus, can you go to the virus fault and copy and paste the virus name and filename path here....

Picking the rogue files have been installed to the protected system restore area....

They can't be deleted by AVG or SPybot... and the program will run automatically at startup time and reinfect....

If you can boot from your original drive... then goto "Start"... right click "My Computer"...

Select (left click) "Properties"..... Select "System Restore"..... Select "Turn off System Restore on all Drives"..... Click "Apply"....

This will delete all files in the protected area..... then reenable System Restore by "deselecting" the above button and clicking "Apply" again...

This re-enables System Restore for the future...

Then reboot and re-run both AVG and Spybot....

Reboot and repeat..... should be clean by then

VB - I THINK you will be required to go into the bios and activate the SATA/RAID option on the MB and then get the proper driver for them.

I'm not a fan of "Gatesware" but do have a couple of boxes I have to run that M$ virus disguised as an OS on.

Good luck from a LINUX driver,

Ron

Rupe - will give you the details once the scan is complete. Took about 4 hours last time and found about 11 infectedfiles - which were a couple of trojans and the rest to dowith a Win32 virus.

After I've done that I'll have a think about following your other instructions. Ta.

Yes Veggie-Cridder, ewe .... (as my repulsion and hate of the acronym posting). And I forget MB - 'Mutha Bored' - should have posted that -

My MB requires I activate SATA/RAID in the bios.

Nah VB... only deletes the protected files in the System Restore area.... the ones that the system uses to revert back to a known configuration.... to restore to a certain period of time...

Wipe them mate (don't forget to re-enable)..... bet my bottom dollar that's where the nasties are being stored and re-infecting....

Re-run AVG and Spybot.... reboot.... repeat.... let me know...

Rupe - followed your instructions in relation to the problem copy of windows on the old HDD (it has 2 copies on there).

Have now logged back in using the OS on the other hard disk (the one experiencing no probs) and am running AVG on the whole computer. Should know the results in about 4 hours  (I'm serious)

Righto - the virus can only found cookie type stuff - no viruses. The ad checker was also pretty clear.

I reloaded with the problematic copy of the operating system and got the followign errors, but that is all. I've left them open at the moment (ie not clicked okay) because I think this may be the prompt for the dodgy winvirus checker thing to come up. The errors are:

1. c:/windows/system32/svpqdscq.dll Specified module could not be found; and
2. same thing but c:/windows/system32/hmbsuxra.dll

Remembering that the virus was a Win32 one :?

Any advice?
