The test were intended as a comparison of the two op systems Steve.... they're perfectly valid....

Yep remove the quad core and you'd would probably get a lower set of figures... and the the differences might be more pronuounced.... I suspecct in XP's favour....

But ... a quad core was used because it needed a 64 bit platform to perform the Vista 64 edition tests....

Mate... run a 2Ghz system with 2Gb of ram using Win98 and it'll probably out-perform the lot ... in some areas of measurement..... run the same test system as above on Win98 and it'll probably be no contest....

The interest to me was the fact that there really wasn't any huge performance gains in running Vista....despite the high end hardware platform....

Ergo.... for most of us who can't be bothered upgrading our hardware.... Vista not only doesn't offer an incentive but in fact it lends weight to remaining with XP.... and taking the cheap performance options .... like extra memory... maybe a cpu upgrade at some stage...

BTW turning off the vista super fetch service makes laptops run SO much better and it stops random restarts on desktops too.. Infact turn off all the new vista feature that they think are so great and it becomes usable.

never said they weren't valid, was highlighting the fact that as with most things a valid test can be tailored to the result you want ;)

 ... nothing tailored about it Steve.... a set "piece" of hardware and a set "piece of software running a set of tests... constants.... results reported....

draw what comparisons you will....

It's a bit like Governments ,, they never have an inquiry until the results are decided:)

Sorry skygazer, I don't know about webcams, but I'm sure someone does :bump:

I just wanted to point out that control+q displays thumbnails of all open tabs in iexplorer 7. I'm sure it's stolen from mozilla or apple or someone, but it's cool nevertheless.

For anyone thats been waiting XP SP3 is now available through Windows Update.... bear in mind that it's a 325Mb download..... relatively quick install and probably (to date anyway) the most hassle free SP released.....

***********************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************

For those who may still be weighing staying with XP or switching to Vista.....

Several industry sources have confirmed that a very early version of Windows 7, previously code-named Blackcomb Vienna, already has been shipped to “key partners” as a “Milestone 1″ (M1) code drop for validation purposes.

The beta for the new operating system is due in late 2008.

While it has generally been believed that Windows 7 was scheduled for a 2010 debut, Microsoft has revised the roadmap and apparently moved up the release date by a few months: A recently distributed roadmap of the OS lists a release to manufacturing in the second half of 2009. Microsoft has declined to comment on this date.

I’d be surprised if we see an SP2 for Vista before Windows 7 is released, especially if Microsoft is pulling out all the stops for 7. Vista feels more and more like a stop-gap between XP and 7

I am just not made to play with computers. I copped a Win32 Virus from a dodgy bit torrent download a couple of wees back and have been working to get my computer up and going again since. Thanks to my stupidity in choosing a Norton as my antivirus ($90 per year mind you) this virus was not detected and did all sorts to my computer.

Anyway - I'd bought a 320gig HDD a while back with the intention of connecting it to a external hard drive case that I had bought. Never got around to it. So since I'd come a cropper with this virus, figured it would be a good idea to connect this as the primary in the computer, put my old 200gig as the slave, load windows onto the new primary, use AVG to remove the virus and then proceed to transfer the files I wanted to the new primary before formatting the old disk.

1st problem, the HDD is no good - a dud. No receipt and may also now be out of warranty. Solution, as a temp fix, take 8gb out of my old comp, make this the primary and the old 200gb as the slave, clean off the virus. This worked.

Then I think - no point trying to transfer 100gb of files to an 8gb drive, better go get me a new HDD. I realise that my motherboard has SATA ports, eventhough my existing drives are on the IDE ports, so figure I'll get a SATA HDD. Find one at UMart for $80, 500gb (16mb cache), figure that's a good buy so get one.

Go to put the bugger in tonight and realise that while I have Sata ports, the IDE power supply cables don't work with SATA HDDs (learnt something new).

So question is, do I have to now go out and buy a new power supply. What is it going to set me back to get one that will support my 3 current IDE devices (DVD, DVD RW and HDD) plus at least 1 SATA device. What else do I need to consider?

Computers shit me to tears. Just when I thought I was starting to work out what I was doing, I realised that I know shit all

For $5 or so you should be able to get a molex (oooo] to sata |....| adapter. I'd post you one as a freebie, but it would be obsolete by the time it transits the international mail system.

Bought one this morning guys. Has two SATA connections :-)

I've got a feeling I may have problems regardless. Am starting to think that eventhough my computer is only 2 or 3 years old (which I guess is old when it comes to computers), the BIOS may not support these large capacity drives. I updated the BIOS last night - but the latest update available is still 2005 .

I hooked up the SATA drive and I think the computer recognised it??? but when went into Windows setup from the CD, after checking devices and stuff, when it came to the screen about where to put Windows (drive and partition) I don't think it found the drive and as a result errored.

I'll do some more work on it later. At the moment I'm running AVG on my old drive again as this morning I managed to complete the windows installation on this drive that originally failed and this gave me access to all my original applications and files again (through my original desktop). Was kinda happy about that for a second, untill the dodgy win virus checker program popped up again - dodgy icon in bottom right corner of the computer trying to look like the windows logo but not quite) and when this happens it can't be closed out. It wants you to install it to keep you safe etc etc. I shut down computer through the switch and proceded to boot up again using the operating system installed on my 8gb disk and am now runnign virus checker through the disk that has this dodgy program on it. Ideally I would locate where this is installed (would have to do that myself I guess) and remove it. I'd then probably be all systems go again with my original disk, havgn all my files apps etc as before. I could then proceed to set myself up with backup HDD so that I'm better placed in future if a similar thing happens again.

Sorry fo wordyness. Am pretty frustrated right now - but learning slowly.
