Here's my idea for changing the vote:

1. Everyone gets one vote, which counts to the winner.
2. Everyone also gets an additional 1/2 vote, but it must be to one of the other parties.

That way the people who lose with their main vote still get to have some say in who wins if there is enough support with the 1/2 votes. I think this would help to keep the parties moderate rather than becoming extremely polarized as they tend to be. (Heavily polarized parties would be unlikely to get the 1/2 votes from people who usually vote with the other party.) Third, fourth, and fifth parties would have a chance if their message was appealing compared to the main two parties' platforms.

Me too. This enables you to ensure your vote counts (ie via second preference) but also ensures that you are financially suporting the party that you think deserves that (every vote means money for the parties/individuals provided they get a certain number. This is especially important for the smaller ones).

Just read about your voting system, you guys already have the preferential vote which is superior to the one we have in the US. I would love to have more than a binary system here in the US. Looking at the candidates for 2008 so far, it would be a real improvement if we could just put all the 15 or so main candidates from all three or more parties into an election, rather than whittling it way down to just 2 1/2 people to choose from.

I have always been a firm believer that we do not pay our politicians enough money and that if we paid more - we may attract a higher quality of person into politics. Sure money should not be the driving decision to get into politics, but some very talented people may have the desire but cannot justify it on the basis of how much more they can be paid for their tallent outside of politics.

Have never been able to understand the people who continually whinge about how much a polly gets paid and about the associated travel benefits and stuff. Just compare what a board member of a largish company gets to what the PM gets.

Compared to the 9 or 10 mill that a top executive makes?
