Once you Mac, you never go back!

I never want to own another windoze beige box again!

But, having said that, I know I will have to use them at work and various other places. Macs are not perfect, but I suppose they 'fit' my needs well. Which probably says that Steve Jobs and the crew have targeted my particular demographic really well.

I don't get it, but then I am a bit slow today...

Buy a (say) Macbook for around $1600
Toss in an emulator (Parallels or similar) around $ 120
Total $1720 give or take...
'Bout the same for the windoze lappy of similar power and capabilities.

Of course there are laptops for $500 on the market now, after "redemption" offers are taken into consideration. (Are they inherently sinful and require salvation???) But these are usually outdated single processor boxes with budget hardware.

VMWare Fusion is a very good emulation software... it lets you run most PC software within OSX not in a virtual machine...

Or simply dual boot with WindowsXP or a linux distro..

I just love virtual computing environments! I have vm ware, altiris software virtualization and sandboxie. Amazing stuff that has eliminated computer problems for me. All I need is an excuse and its installed virtually.

Yeah, I've had no problems with Parallels, but as I have said, I'm not a demanding user. I have installed XP and it runs better than on my XP box, more reliably and seemingly faster, but the motherboard and processor are a bit old!
With Windoze I have had all sorts of malware and phishing attacks...just a matter of time before Macs get hit seriously I suppose...

This machine is an Intel iMac with Leopard and Vista. I also use only one Mac for both Mac and Windows software development at work - dual boot with Bootcamp. You don't need to buy anything unless you want Mac and Windows running at the same time.

For those that want it here's the direct link to the Microsoft download of XP SP3...

http://download.windowsupdate.com/msdow ... ebfde4.exe

At present the link is just a direct link, but I imagine that Microsoft will have a landing page that I can link to sometime soon.

The release via Windows Update/Download has been delayed due to problems that uncovered a compatibility issue between Microsoft Dynamics Retail Management System (RMS) and Windows XP SP3 and Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1).

According to a Microsoft spokesperson, the Release to Web (RTW) of Windows XP SP3 has been delayed:

Quote:
In the last few days, we have uncovered a compatibility issue between Microsoft Dynamics Retail Management System (RMS) and Windows XP SP3 and Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1). Microsoft Dynamics RMS is a retail chain management solution for small and midsize customers.

In order to make sure customers have the best possible experience we have decided to delay releasing Windows XP SP3 to Windows Update and Microsoft Download Center.

To help protect our customers, we plan to put filtering in place shortly to prevent Windows Update from offering both service packs to systems running Microsoft Dynamics RMS. Once filtering is in place, we expect to release Windows XP SP3 to Windows Update and Download Center.

Until we have published a fix for this issue, we advise Microsoft Dynamics RMS customers to not install either service pack. Microsoft Dynamics RMS customers running Windows XP SP3 or Windows Vista SP1 should contact Microsoft Customer Support Services for additional information.

The fix is currently in testing and will be available as soon as that process is complete.

For those that are interested.... benchmark performance figures for intial release of XP (XP RTM), XP SP2, XP SP3, and the various varieties of Vista and Vista SP1...

Most home users will be using the 32 bit version of Vista....

All benchmarks were performed on the same system and hardware...

ahhhhhh, but if you halved the ram and shaved off a processor core what would the results look like ;)

Then XP SP3 would probably beat Vista hands down...... especially if you left the memory at 2Gb

Test system used (for both) was configured as follows....

AMD Phenom 9700 quad-core processor
ATi Radeon 3850 graphics card with 256MB RAM
ASUS M3A32-MVP Deluxe motherboard
2GB (2 x 1GB) Corsair Dominator CM2X1024-8500C5D RAM
Western Digital Raptor 10,000RPM 150GB primary hard drive
Western Digital Caviar 7,200RPM 500GB secondary hard drive
