The most annoying thing was that I didn't manage to get the chock wedges out of the freezer in time.. I should have eaten them last night.. :)

Oh no. Not the choc wedges. Geez Joel, how can I leave you in charge?

I am sad to say we lost all 50 barra. The power went off at 4pm Monday and didn't come back on until 4.30pm Tuesday. We had a backup otto air pump running during the night. I replaced the batteries in the early hours and it would not start again. By 7am I had fish struggling at the top and dieing. I did a water change at 7am to try and get some air into the tankand reduce ammonia. We lost six before we harvested the lot.

Luckily they were all a good size...average 650g, biggest 888grams. We have been unable to fillet them due to work. They are sitting in an esky of ice with their heads off. How long do we have to fillet them??... wil they be okay to fillet tonight...or tomorrow afternoon?. It is going to take a long time to clean them all up. Unfortunately we don't have trout coming for another month. How should we handle the down time with no fish?

Sorry to hear about your issues fishrcool... would be happy to help if I had power myself... I must say that the battery backup system I built paid off... so far anyway...

We were tempted to do the same by harvesting them all this morning, but we were not sure whether the power would be back even tonight.... the whole night Western Power was reporting unknown restoration time...

I suppose when it comes to such power related issues, we are unable to seek for help on this forum since we cannot get on the forum... maybe a Fish Helpline or something can be setup for such cases...???

Continued thoughts and prayers for you guys. Keep your chins up!

After it is all over it seems a good time to review the good/bad/ugly and discuss back-up systems. what worked and for how long... Do you have sun available so soon after the storm? Would a solar battery pack have any impact, etc... Just wondering what/how many lessons we can all learn from this.

Hey Sarah, I reckon your news is not so bad, that size is really good. Just scale gut and freeze. It doesn't take that long once you start.
As for the trout not coming for another month, it is really as not much of a big deal as you might think.

There are nutrients still slowly releasing in the system, about the time you add trout add your autumn/winter seedlings.
Use the time in between to tidy things up and continue harvesting end of summer produce. Silverbeet, celery and a variety of ther plants will keep going with out too much suffering.
Thats my experience anyway.

They were good size Barra. Mine averaged 420g when I started culling them. Surprised you hadnt started to eat them weeks ago. You'll have a well stocked freezer now! :)

Crikey! Those hailstones are some of the biggest I've ever seen.

Floods, cyclones, bushfires. :upset: But we are a resilient lot ain't we :?:

You could use Peeponics. Add a little Humonia from time to time to keep the system ticking over.
It's only for a couple of weeks.

We have been harvesting a few every week.Luckily we harvested 22 on Thur before the storm. We ended up filleting and skinning them. It took until around 11pm, so on the hole not to bad. At least we have power now, there are still a lot of people without.

For those that have been without power for more than 12 hours, apparently you can claim some payment from Western Power for your inconvenience... I have just been informed by a colleague of mine so do read the details properly to make sure that it is true... And also some insurance do pay for food spoilage as well...
