Yes, thats on top of the normal 24% or what ever. Of course with deductions most people get most of their % back.

I think that what alot of people miss is what the handout is for and how they can spend it for the betterment of the Australian ecomomy. Many just see it as a free handout and don't stop to think why they got it. Where is the benefit if every second person walks into Harvey Norman and buys a chiwanese TV?

If everyone went and bought an Australian made rainwater tank, solar water heater, insulation or spent it on emplying local tradies the money would continue to go around and make a difference. Even if they spent it at the local greengrocers. I think the govenment really needs to push through an advertising campaign making people aware of how they can best spend the money to help the economy before they go handing out the dollars.

You're right in a way Burnsey...

The handout is certainly meant to prop up the retail market... not so much the manufacturing sector though... because sadly, most of the manufacturing sector has moved offshore in the last decade... along with many of the jobs that traditionally our youth would have been employed in when leaving school.

Partly for reasons of profit gouging, by manufacturing in countries where labour is paid pathetic wages... partly because we as consumers have chosen to consume cheap crap from overseas...

Our consumption... and economy is "price" driven... by us the consumer...

Turning over the "retail" inventory could be seen to benefit our economy, as it keeps demand for Chinese products higher... keeping their factories turning...

However it doesn't do our balance of payments any good ... as our only exports (these days) are mining related...

So we buy more in... but receive less payments for goods in...

Buying local made products will help keep some people employed... and will hel fuel internal demand for steel and other base products.... but our local consumption is small due to the decline in the manufacturing sector...

So much for rampant "free trade" and "globalisation"... and subsidy removals (particularly in the face of trading partners that continue to subsidise their industries)....

Result ... our ability to produce, supply and control our national economy has been effectively shafted... and we're now reliant and at the mercy of overseas companies and economies...

So much for all the "right" thinking high-flyers... not that they'll suffer any of the consequences...

But ... much of the blame rests with ourselves... and the ease at which the "bling bling" superficiality of the last decade infested our consciousness and consumption...

Look at the local car industry for example.... why is it in such dire straights.... mainly because instead of moms and dads buying Holdens and Fords.... we bought bloody Japanese/Korean/Malayasian/American bloody 4 wheel drives... so that we could "look good" ... or look like the bloke down the road who we thought was "doing alright"...

Really? I thought it was due to a national population the size of many overseas cities.

Need to put that in the context it was written...

ie local consumption of steel and other base products (while keeping some people employed) is small (perhaps I should have said smaller...) ... due to the decline in the manufacturing sector....

Yes, we have a small (relative to some other countries) population... and our economy is small in comparison to other countries.... both in terms of production and.... consumption...

Point I was making that whereas before we could produce (locally) much of what we could consume... we no longer can.... and therefore buying local made products (which there just aren't many of any more)... isn't going to stimulate the local economy and keep people employed...

I think they bought a heap of salt water from the Murray Darling or something like that, as a west aussi I always get confused by what they are trying to do along that river system.
