The food markets in Spain are a good example of supply and demand. They want good smell and taste. Here we want cheap, perfect looking food so we throw out as much as half of what is produced (while other countries starve) because it is not cosmetically perfect and apparently taste does really matter to anyone here as long as its cheap.

Good point Dan ..... AHHH can't remember the actual song ..... but went something like ..... I don;t mind marks on my Apples but please keep the birds and the bees?

Dan , yes the consumer controls the market to a GREAT extent ..... If people are willing to pay a decent price for decent food , then the market will moove that way. Ultimately , perhaps the big retailers will be left selling their crud to the people unwilling to buy decent food , whilst the rest of us are consuming yummy BYAP vegies and fish.
Personally , I'm happy to pay for nice , TASTY food . As our spending power reduced with my wife at home ,, we cut in other areas ,, not in quality of food. I've even started brewing my own beer ,, none of that capping and bottling rubbish ,, done in small kegs ,, under pressure they finish the brew in 3 or 4 days:)

My Father was telling me food in China went up 10% in the last 3 months ,, he is normally very accurate with economic data ....., inflation in China is under a lot of pressure ..... that means the cheap goods we where getting are going to start getting more expensive. Time to start planning ahead , I've been buying some good quality , long-life goods such as Refrigerator , TV , Micro-wave , quality off-peak hot-water system etc , because in a year or two the prices of these things are going to soar.

I very much like fish ,, but cannot eat it every day ..... look into Japanese Quail ,, you'll be very surprised what they can provide.

In all honesty, I am a lover of science- passionate in fact- but right now it scares the crap out of me. Because I closely follow scientific circles, I know what scientists and geneticists have been doing- scaffolding to rebuild lost fingers great! but genetically breeding pigs for hemoglobin (human blood) is not. Yes, the scientists are breeding pigs with human blood in them so they can be used not only for blood donations but they are being studied more for harvesting organs, especially the heart, liver and kidney.
Read about the Spanish Flu which killed something like 20 to 100 million people over a course of few years, they aren't even sure how many died- they traced the origins of that pandemic flu disease outbreak and it's the same MO as all the other flu pandemics we get- you put poultry, which carry the avian flu virus, next to pigs and the virus crosses over to them, then it mutates in the pigs to become contagious to humans. Pigs are the vector when it comes to avian flu viruses- there have been very few cross contaminations directly from bird to man. Birds usually die from the virus but not always but pigs don't. Worse case senerio- a human with pig body parts, infected with avian flu, spreading the disease without any knowledge- a typhoid Mary in modern times and a disease outbreak of horendous proportions.

I fear that scientists in their zeal will create something catestrophic that can't be undone- something that shouldn't have been created in the first place, like the creation of the atomic bomb.

Anybody know if any of this research was being done south of the border to possibly to avoid the american legal system?

Do you want to know something even scarier than a "mad"scientist? How about a "mad" housewife or a "mad drywaller"? See the link to understand what I mean. By the way, this is very common.

The geneticist in the garage
Citizen scientists are setting up their own gene laboratories in the hope of inventing new and useful organisms. But are they a danger to us all?Meredith Patterson is not your typical genetic scientist. Her laboratory is based in the dining room of her San Francisco apartment. She uses a plastic salad spinner as a centrifuge and Ziploc plastic bags as airtight containers for her samples. But the genetically modified organism (GMO) she is attempting to create on a budget of less than $500 (£350) could provide a breakthrough in food safety.
Helen Wallace of GeneWatch in the UK thinks biohacking could be dangerous. "It is increasingly easy to order genes by mail," she says. "Something like smallpox is hard to get, but there are other organisms that could become harmful. If you change a living organism's properties, you could also change its interactions with the environment or the human body." She adds: "Scientists are notorious for not seeing the unintended consequences."

DIYbio is an organization that aims to help make biology a worthwhile pursuit for citizen scientists, amateur biologists, and DIY biological engineers who value openness and safety. This will require mechanisms for amateurs to increase their knowledge and skills, access to a community of experts, the development of a code of ethics, responsible oversight, and leadership on issues that are unique to doing biology outside of traditional professional settings.

I'm on a roll now....

Extract DNA from Strawberries...
Yummy strawberries have lots of DNA Syndicated from thetech.org “Do-it-yourself Strawberry DNA” Strawberries, bacteria, humans—all living things have genes, and all of these genes are made of DNA. That’s why scientists can take a gene from one living thing and put it into another. For example, they can put human genes into bacteria to make new medicines. How do scientists take DNA out of a living thing? It’s not that hard—there are lots of ways to do it! You can follow the directions in the video below to get DNA out of a strawberry. Or you can follow...Read More

I love the part that I underlined- it's not that hard??? Scary thought indeed. And when I was a kid, I wanted to create the first Pegasus- just cross a horse, with a condor and maybe a little terrydactal......hum.....

i think youre all freaking out over the lesser danger

the danger of GM is not as much in the eating
its in the corporate ownership

its the social side of GM that could damn our worlds future
the privatisation of nature

But..

i dont think it will happen

because the tide is already turning
People are fighting back on multiple levels
most clearly with alternative answers to the question of increased productivity
and by voting with their wallets
