Ohh great i just got a laptop with Visa on it

Dlegrade, I would seriously suggest that you format the drive and install XP on it before you start loading any apps or data on it.

Laptops traditionally are equiped with lower levels of CPU power, memory and hard disk capacity.... top this off with onboard/limited graphics and "Vista" will probably struggle like a paralysed greyhound in quicksand.

XP on the other hand, if its a new laptop, should enjoy the computing power available. Chances are you've only got the "home" edition of Vista loaded anyway...... frankly the pretty pictures and gui just aren't worth the overhead.

In my opinion the minumum configuration for a Vista system is as follows...

PIV HT 3.2Ghz processor or 2Ghz dual core....

2Gb of dual channel ram....

300Gb hard disk, at least SATA2 or Ultra Scsi....

512Mb video card....

If that's your laptop.... it's a hell of a laptop :D

You'd get the same pretty pictures (well almost) and the multimedia features running Media Centre 2005 with way less overhead than Vista.

Load XP and wait for Longhorn Home Server Edition in 12 months if you really feel the need to upgrade.... same specs as above though, sorry!

P.S... Forgot to mention.... your genuine copy of XP should allow you to load to your laptop for personal use.... if you have to phone MS for activation just tell them it's your laptop....

They might give you a speil about only using a single computer at any one time ...i.e home comp or laptop aren't supposed to be used at the same time

I am very tempted to go out and stock up on XP pro licences before they stop selling them. Call it an investment for all the power users who can see past the flashy new cover. Vista is really just a new face to XP. Micro$oft should really just scrap the entire code and start from scratch. But at their rate we can safely call it Windows 2020.

Vista for the home user or new computer buyer is perfectly reasonable, a bit overpriced but it will do the job with a bit extra security not to mention a virus scanner that doesn't quite cut it, but it is there non-the-less. Half the hardware on the market isn't compatible but for lucky new laptop owners or package deals you'll be OK.

If you have 2-4 GB of RAM and AT LEAST a Intel Core 2 DUO 6600 then vista should run OK.

Plus by owning a copy of Vista you should be entitled to run XP on the machine. If you can get hold of a enterprise copy of XP you can install it without having to activate.

I have one at work, but it is the Japanese version...

Any IT person at a large business should have access to a copy.

For those who might be a little lacking in disk space....

Quote:
Seagate, the hard disk maker, announced the release of its 1 TB hard disk drives for home (Barracuda 7200.11) and enterprise (Barracuda ES.2) users. Thus, Seagate joins Hitachi and Samsung in the Terabyte memory segment.

Salient features of the two products are:

Both have an rpm of 7200 with 8.5 millisecond average seek time.
Both drives have a 32 MB cache.
PowerTrim firmware to reduce power consumption.
Barracuda 7200.11 offers a sustained transfer rate of 105 MB/sec.
Barracuda 7200.11 is priced at US$399.99.
The newly designed Barracuda ES.2 drive includes:

Perpendicular Magnetic Recording (PMR) for optimized usage.
Rotational vibration feed forward system for sustained performance.
MTBF (Mean Time between Failure) of 1.2 million hours.
Seagate is the last to join the 1 TB series after Hitachi and Samsung (TGDaily)

Microsoft has informed its corporate customers that it plans to release Windows Vista SP1 in the second half of 2007. It will include security fixes and quality improvements.

Probably wont be released until Windows Server 2007 (Longhorn) is offically released, as both products share the majority of the underlying binary code and executable programs/processes etc....

Would expect XP SP3 about the same time... although MS may not formally bundle it as a Service Pack.... word is they are looking to bring XP and Windows 2000 to end-of -life status asap.

Yeah, I figure it will be at least 12-18 months before I even have the slightest thoughts of looking at Vista...

Now for us slightly less than up with all the goss, could some one please explain it too me........ I heard ages back how they were going to release "longhorn", yeah very funny I thought.... Then I heard vista was coming and I figured they had renamed it from longhorn to vista (smart move), but now I hear they are still releasing longhorn?

So is vist just a bit of a prerelease of whats to come, a stop gap, a bit like ME sort of was???

On the money EB.... purely a marketing release like ME..... added advantage of forcing the installed hardware level up to that required to operate Vista/Longhorn at a reasonable level....

Far as I'm concerned it's what we call "bloatware".

Longhorn is still the "official" designation for the forthcoming "Windows Server 2007" .... (or NT 6.0 shhhhh!)

Was intended originally to be Windows Server 2003.... although Windows 2003 became something slightly different.... more NT 5.0 than XP but not quite "Longhorn"

Quick quizz for all those that "think" they know there MS Windows operating systems.......

What was the name for the Windows operating system (designed by Bill Gates wife) intended for release between Windows for Workgroups and what became known as Windows 95??????

.
