Multiplication has a higher precedence that addition, so the multiplication must be completed first. No assumed brackets needed.

Dui if you add me on FB i will link it for you.

Is that because nothing would add up Dui...

Or because you've got nothing (zero) to say....

Rupe, I guess we're arguing semantics here.
If you went to a certification audit of safety critical software and you happened to say "Assumed bracket" they'd shoot you on sight :)

Exactly... the precedence assumes the bracket.... as it would if it were to be written with a bracket...

rsevs, left to right is more "important"

Very probably Dui.... but pure logic would suggest that I would actually be correct...

But do they write software based on logic these days...

So... the last operation is therefore.... a multiplication by zero... as there are no brackets... assumed, or otherwise....

Yes, but the point is, brackets define precedence without argument.
Your point in English is valid, but in Maths, it isn't :)

No, the last operation is + 1 * 0
The * is evaluated before the +

And in the arguement you present... the answer "13"... can only be derived... by assuming a bracket of (1*0).. in order for it to take precedence...

My point exactly... I rest my case...

And I rest mine, 13 is calculated without assuming anything, just applying the rules.

The rules.. assume a bracket... to apply, and define precedence...

It's a bit like the old philosophical question...

"I think, therefore.. I am"....

Well really.... don't you have to be (am).. before you can think....

Or can you think yourself into existance...

I loved philosophy at Uni...

See... Interesting discussion :D

I think i would like philosophy too. I can sit for ages and think about things. Its a shame most of them dont put food on the table :P

Dui can you explain this:

left to right is more "important"

I cant think of a how that would change the outcome of simple equations like this. At school i thought i got told to do the multiplication first then division second. Not multiplication and division at teh same time left to right. I never was the best student though...

Yep... as though they were bracketed... and probably correctly... should be... to avoid confusion...

Just type it into a calculator.
The 1+1-1 answers come up straight away.
The only time the * takes precedence is in the very last operation.
