If there are any farmers amongst you guys, why would they be so quick to pull out the trees?

The first guy is ripping trees out after ony 24 hours, surely he hasnt done any research as to if anyone else would pick up his fruit, why would he do this? Are there species of fruit SPC own that he now cannot sell to anyone else?

I am sympathetic to this situation. But diversification of risk is an important strategy in any robust business.

Yea, I found it strange that they would just rip out trees so quickly too. If it takes five years to get a tree up to production, I think waiting a month would probably be unnoticeable. Also, why not just graft on a marketable variety onto he existing tree? The real issue here is the monoculture practice food companies impose on farmers. It is high time farmers wake up to this and stop being Monsanto's, ConAgra's, and Coke's little b!tches. Everyone of those orchard owners wears big boy pants now. Their grandparents that they all talked so much about should have taught them about the dangers of having only one customer.

Oh yea, and boycott coke, and every other conventional food producer. Stick with certified organic, or grow it yourself. But then the grow it yourself part is why we are all here.

How do food companies impose monoculture practices on to farmers?

One of my neighbours is a potato grower and is subject to rigid constraints. My understanding is that what he grows, in terms of potato varieties, how much he grows and even when he grows it, is dictated to him by the WA Potato Board. Of course, the sale of his crop is controlled by the Board, as well.

The WA Potato Board or PMC is a government organisation. This is not big business disrupting small business but government disrupting all business, as usual.

Protectionism as its finest
