Abiotic oil is a myth, Russian production levels have merely risen to the point where they are marginally below where they were before the fall of the USSR. The disruption this caused meant production levels declined considerably...so while they have risen over recent years, it is only back to near Soviet era levels - it has nothing whatsoever to do with non-existent abiotic oil.

Like the US Lower 45 producers, Russian production levels have already peaked. Though they do have considerable reserves in both oil and natural gas, their production per annum will never exceed what they have already achieved.

You may be right. I have no way of measuring any of those statistics myself. And I don't trust the oil companies to tell me the unaltered truth. I have often thought that research, (scientific or otherwise) would be much easier if everyone told the truth -- or I could instantly discern between a truth and a lie.

Forgive me if I propagated a myth. My main theme was "think for yourself". Hysteria caused by media rarely solves the world's problems. But AP just might. Backyard Aquaponics is about people using what they've got to do what they can -- and learning in the process.

It is ironic that in our age of high technology and scientific progress -- some of us are returning to agricultural methods used by the ancients.

One other comment: Am I the only one who has noticed that with the ease of communication and publication, the quality of our communications and publications has dropped? I think often of people like Lincoln or Dickens or the Curies -- and how they produced quality work with quill pens and candle-light. The strength of their character overcame their difficulties.

I can email my dad in 30 seconds and for free but I rarely do.
I have online dictionaries and spellcheckers but I rarely use them.
I have a cellphone and inexpensive long distance but rarely use them to talk about anything of substance.
Unfortunately technology cannot overcome weak character. Character trumps technology every time.

I tried to put my favorite saying on there but it wouldn't stick
-- at least I can't see it.

-if you've gotta do it and can't do it right -- learn to enjoy doing it badly.
I got a huge laugh out of that, the first time I read it. Now I quote it to my wife all the time. She doesn't think it's funny but she laughs becuase I'm laughing.

wife -- I just don't feel like a good mother
me -- ... enjoy doing it badly....

wife -- Sorry supper is late and the house is such a mess
me -- ...enjoy doing it badly...

I guess that saying sums up much of what I learned in college -- though the other thing I learned was that it is more important to "learn the teacher" than it is to learn the information.
...Just be glad none of you teachers had me in your classes.

I figure I would have helped 'learn the teacher' a thing or two. hehehe

I have always said a lot of teachers teach best what they most need to learn.

I forgive you.

Peak Oil Is Real.

The Global Peak of Oil Production WAS [PLEASE NOTE THE PAST TENSE] in May of 2005.

Here's a graph:
http://www.princeton.edu/hubbert/popups/chart-01.html

Here's some discussion:
http://www.princeton.edu/hubbert/current-events.html
[Mexico] Cantarell crashing at ~14% decline. [Kuwait] Burgan crashing at ~14% decline.
http://www.theoildrum.com/story/2006/4/17/11120/4955

[China] Da'qing in decline >4% THREE YEARS AGO: .
http://english.people.com.cn/200401/06/ ... 1970.shtml

[USA] East Texas in decline since freaking 1971:
http://graphoilogy.blogspot.com/2006/05 ... on_25.html

[KSA] Saudi Arabia down 8% in 2006...
http://www.theoildrum.com/node/2325

Peak Oil is why I hang out here. Peak Oil is why it's terribly important to learn to produce your own food. (AND stay warm in the winter, but that's a whole different topic...)

Is it going to be "Mad Max"? No. (Or God I hope not...)

Is it going to be "The Greater Depression?" [That makes The Great Depression of the 30's look like "The Good Old Days?"]

You Betcha!

Victory Gardens will get us through, again. They have to be WAY better this time around. Aquaponics is the key.

The depletion of fossil fuels is the only thing that is going to save us from Global Warming. Let us all hope to God that there's not enough oil/gas/coal left to burn to tip the climate into something like the planet Venus.

The Politicians are using Global Warming to get us used to the idea that we don't get to have 200+ energy slaves (fossil fuel energy) at our beck and call anymore, and that we have to learn to do things for ourselves.

Peak Oil is real. Global Warming is real. But “Doing Our Part” to save the planet from climate change is a lot easier to sell to the masses than “It's running out and you just can't have it any more...”

Aeon, where you been? Please back me up on this...

(Disclaimer: I am a recovering doom-a-holic...)
(Gotta come up for air now...)
(While there's still air left...)

maybe, just maybe, the seemingly "must-have" of energy now will spur a development into "unconventional energy" now THAT would be a cool spin off from peak oil and the greater depression. And ya know what? its probably a very real possibility becasue we have become a race of "oh i simply can't believe you don't have aircon, how does your child survive!" LOL
