Looking into yeast options for our whole grain home brewing ventures and have been told liquid yeast is the go because you can split it up and get better value for money.

Got any recomendations peeps?

Hi Charlie

I've heard that the liquid yeast may give a better flavour (however I can't tell the difference) but as

for value for money, I think dry yeasts are cheaper.

dry yeast Safale US05 is $5.95

Wyeast American Ale 1056 is $11.00

As for splitting the liquid yeast, you must maintain it in a completely Sterile environment until
you use it, which in a home environment will be very difficult.

I've used both and personally I would use the dry yeast.

cheers Lou

In related news :). I am currently at the Australian national home brewing conference in Melbourne. So I have been having a number of wonderful brews for the last 3 days...

Everyone I know of is sold out as well.

Although I have to confess that I haven't used starsan for a long time. I just buy the generic no-rinse sanitizer from the local home brew shop and it works fine for me.

Alex used to use Whitelabs liquid yeast for the cidres. Much nicer flavour than the dry yeasts

Star San is a product from 5-Star chemicals that is used to sanitize your brewing equipment to prevent fermenting beer (or anything else) from getting infected. The advantage of it (and other similar products) is you don't have to rinse whatever it is your sanitizing. You just use it.

I always use Star San, but if there is an equivalent generic it should work just as well. I also found out by accident that it works really well for making stainless cookware look like new.

One of the big benefits of liquid yeast is the variety of strains to choose from that are simply lacking in dry yeast. I probably use Wyeast 1968 (London ESB) more than anything. It has a great flavor and flocculates so well that the beer looks filtered. Also, unless things have changed dramatically since last time I looked, you simply can't make a true hefeweizen, Belgian ale, or many other styles with dry yeast.

That being said, I use dry Danstar Nottingham quite a bit when I don't need a particular flavor profile from the yeast. It's pretty solid for most ales.

I've started delivering my Xmas Mead to Relatives and friends. It's a sweet, young mead (7 months), it's not as clear as I'd like, but already tastes great.
