Bundy... I'll reveal my prejudices right up front....

Hell I don't expect Bush and Bonsai to do anything worthwhile at all....

too gutless to stand up to any of the industrial moguls....

then again a "prostitute" mentality ensures that you never confront the pimp...

gutless little weasels I say.... now that should fire up a few of the locals lol

Like C1 pointed out... we have our own industrial giants and environmental rapists here in Australia... look what BHP did up in OK Tedi...

just level the rain forest, dig a big hole and dump the crap straight in the river....

Hey who gives a "" it's only the natives complaining.

Dumb, ignorant savages... if they had any brains they would have invented D9's, massive shovels and dug the damn hole themselves...

Thank god we can bring them real progress lol

If you wondering why I'm really antsi about this one ... it's because the Fly River was one of the best barra fishing spots... great fishing in general...

Studies show the sediment from Ok Tedi has resulted in fish decreases of the order of 80%

Most of the electric car concepts were indeed bought out by the major fuel companies. However they were just that... concepts. If there was some overwhelming, "Solve all our problems" design appear I believe then it would have been noticed and step up above the reaches of the fuel companies.

Do these companies have there hands on some green, environmentally friendly ideas... you bet-cha. Are they researching/developing clean and efficient cars?... well only the ones who are not in millions of dollars of debt. Will the average person afford them if they do make them?.... No way in hell. Will these companies make these concepts freely and publicly available?... While ford and gmc circle the drain they will make sure to bring everyone else down with them.

well TC I do remember the first mobile phones... they were to be out of the reach of most ppl @ a cost of $6000 and massive call charges,
but I know ppl who had them.
and that was 18+ years ago. Mind you if an investment of $6k was made on property it could be worth $600k right about now..
Funny thing is that all those bucks were claimed as tax deductions(rorts)...

Electronic devices are getting cheaper because they are so far from physical limitations, whereas cars are already within an order of magnitude of their theoretical optimum. The way to make a cheap electric vehicle is to stick an electric motor and storage on a push bike, but they already exist and outperform all other vehicles in terms of effective speed.

So if you want to make a difference, ride an electric bike. Otherwise, quit yer whining.

I have said this before...
If you take the engine out of your car replace it with an electric motor, their small light and use the gear box already there, place a small petrol generator in the engine well with a few batteries, you as a few of my nieghbours have done will get 100 ks from a litre of petrol about 10x the efficiency of standard car...

I don't believe you c1, unless they change their driving habits too. Electric motors are heavier than gearboxes for a given power output. Otherwise motor racing would all be using them now (or their use would be banned).

njh- you don't have to believe me, in fact I don't want you to believe me.
But those out their who know me know that I would not make a statement unless it was factual.
Also the gear box only uses 2 gears, top/reverse gear.

njh,

I am a motorsport engineer by profession and thought I could make a couple of points on one of your comments. Most rules for professional series have very strict guidelines for the propulsion systems used. However the future for electric or hybrid systems in motorsport could be very bright.

Motorsport by nature is not very energy efficient as vehicle performance is all about acceleration, whether it is forwards, backwards or sideways. A car travelling at constant velocity is not very successful. This is the main reason why there is so much potential for hybrid and electric systems. A massive amount of energy is lost during braking. You can easily see this in photos of cars with brakes glowing quite bright. However not long after the braking cycle you need to apply a large amount of energy to get back up to speed. This is where a temporary energy storage and release system is of big benefit. This may or may not be electric.

Some of these technologies are being looked at for the next concorde agreement in F1.

Of a side note there are already amateur electirc cars racing against petrol vehicles. I don't know of any in Australia. However in the US there is an electric SCCA autocross car that won its class (against petrol vehicles) last year. I'm pretty sure this was a local class. There are also a few electric dragsters that can post pretty competitive times. I should note that these events are very short, so energy storage isn't as much of an issue.

In terms of power to weight for the device providing motion, the electric motor is pretty good. The main issue is power storage.

As for adoption of electric and hybrid technologies in motorsport the biggest barrier is not performance. The motorsport political scene is very restrictive. There has been a general trend for quite a while of tightening rules and suppressing new technologies with the desire to reduce costs. This does not achieve the desired goal and has also, in my opinion, detracted from the spectacle. There is a lot of technology in modern motor vehicles that is banned in a lot of the popular forms of racing. Also there has been a rapid increase in one make series that make little to no incentives for development. Instead developments in racing are more focused on design, construction and tuning techniques.

Sorry for going into a little rant in my first ever post.

Kev

Thanks Kev... the bit I like is, when stopping or slowing, power is generated not wasted or consumed but created...even on all four wheels and because it is an engine brake you stop very quickly and don't loose traction it ramps down...power ready for acceleration.
C1
PS nice rant too Kev seems like you have a few skills that might come in helpfull
