I could never understand how Buddhists could justify killing plants but not animals and insects. As though animals were above everything else and plants don't feel. The fact is animals are just different from plants, not above them.

I realise this doesn't directly reply to what you said, but...

I got really burnt once with an argument when I said something like "I cant see why you don't want me to eat meat when most plants don't want to be eaten either."

My monk opposition remarked "I never asked you to not eat meat"

I wasn't paying attention

It turns out, its much harder to win an argument when you are not paying attention, and are arguing against something that nobody has said

Yeah the guy was a little difficult to understand but very interesting talk.... Damn those smart plants..

Dont have to worry about vegies from the stoopidmarkets as the plants are well and truly dead by the time we get them.

Next time you are walking by a grow bed and some over grown plant "reaches out to grab you", it may have actually been trying to reach out and grab you.

Gonna have to keep a keen eye on those tommies... and turnips (turnips just look suspicious, besides, with that much root mass in the bulb... must be a genius).

I always wear my earmuffs when approaching the vege patch with a sharp knife... can't bear to hear the terrified screams...

I don't think your "IF" is big enough...

I do find it unusual when people consider that if a particular method is not going to work 100% then you shouldn't use it at all.

The concept of putting a price on carbon has been recommended by many economists as a method of slowing CO2 outputs, and it makes sense, you put a price on something then it has a value, at the moment there is no value, no incentive for people not to pollute. It may not guarantee a complete answer to the problems we will be facing in the future but it's a step in the right direction.

I really can't believe our political parties haven't jumped on the idea as a way for Australia to become a world leader in the field, instead we have moved backwards.

Since when has Labor managed anything properly yet? For a start they are taking a large chunk of the revenue and giving it to a large number of people so they dont have to change thier habit and cut back...... Kind of defeats thier mantra of the carbon tax will change peoples habits. Sadly I think it will just be another missed oportunity that is wasted by mismangement and greed.

Politics just can't get in the way of something so important though.

I think a carbon tax has merit if only because it's generally a good idea for a society to gain it's revenue from things that are generally bad for us, and as a result make it easier to leave fresh veggies, books, milk etc less taxed. Even if it doesn't reduce carbon.

Even when I was a smoker, I could see the merit in taxing cigarettes.

Revenues have to come from somewhere, and I'd rather not see things banned. Just taxed out of existence.

That way if you really care you can still afford to run your twin V8 engine race car, but only on weekends, and only if you ride your bike to work.

I realise it means the very wealthy will still get to do whatever we* want, but that's a different issue.
