Did anyone see the whirlpool created? Incredible, and bloody scary. Hopefully the tsunamis won't impact any low lying towns around the pacific ....

There has been at least one death and plenty of damage on the pacific coast. Pales in comparison to places closer to the epicenter though. I have not heard any more about the Hawaiian islands - don't know how bad that was. The whirlpool footage is pretty incredible, but the clip they keep showing that gets me are the greenhouses being mowed down by the water. The nuclear power issues are pretty disturbing also.

I feel terrible for the people of japan, I visited tokyo, nagano and kyoto in december.
They are without a doubt the most courteous and honest people i've ever met. They are also incredibly smart and dedicated to their work, so i'm sure they will rebuild.

Lets hope they can rebuild the nuclear power plants (or at the very least contain them) real soon

It's an unprecedented disaster that's happened to the power stations, but they will be ok as long as the rods don't melt through the concrete containment housing. if that happens you'll have contaminated ground to deal with that'll have molten fuel rods in it - tricky to pickup and contain.

the media is in a frenzy over the power stations because it sells papers.... but the real disaster is the toxic chemicals that have been washed over the land and into the water ways. think of all the toxic crap you keep at home and that industry uses, now imagine that all burst open and spread over 1000's of square km's. there's no way to contain that like they can with the power station.

Look at the difference in culture....when katrina hit new orleans, the theft and looting was out of control. People were stealing big screen TVs while the city flooded! After Ike, there were plenty of reports of theft in the hardest hit areas also. The people over there seem to have more dignity then anything I have witnessed here. They may eat whales and dolphins, but there seems to be something fundamentally different in their society that really makes them stand apart IMHO. I agree, the nuclear thing is really diverting the media from the real disasters happening. My heart really goes out to them.

Doesn't seem like there is much of anything left to steal. A typical building there is either completely fine or completely destroyed. Nothing much in between.

I'll hitch a ride on that answer, me too.

There is definitely a difference in culture on the looting and stealing, you don't seem to see as much of it when you are there, still have to be careful though.

Unfortunately Japan is on the brink of a nuclear disaster despite the sensationalist reporting from the media.
They are certainly not out of the woods yet regarding that.

The chemical spillage is not something I thought about but a very good point. soon I reckon you will find that disease & thirst will be issues apart from all the others.

Cheers.

Pretty much killed any chance of Australia ever getting a nuclear plant and reducing coal use.

40 year plant, survived a earthquake that was at/or above the limits off its design for a 8.2 quake but the Tsunami took out the backup generators.
It does surprise me that there was no upper floor water storage tank that could gravity feed the cooling system.
Loosing 4.5GW of power production is going to really hamper reconstruction efforts, it makes our coal plants look tiny in comparison.

While I am not at the point of crawling into a survival bunker these recent disasters have made me think about what I have on hand at home. Assuming the house was accessible I think I would be better off than many but still $20 for a couple days sealed water bottles etc is a small investment.
