But at around $40K a year (wind turbines) + the money from the agisted stock he misses out on a small fortune (more than I make in two years :().

The lady's at the local RSL now prefer younger men! :D

If "the mature aged gentleman" is on the pension - money would affect this, beer is a good thought tho :occasion5:

"getting old" is politically incorrect - aging gracefully in the aquaponian way is the new age term

A while back I got into a huge arguement at a party about wind farms, there was a heap of dudes there saying they were ugly etc. It just doesn't sit with me.

I think thye look really graceful, besides the are on TOP of hills there only blocking out sky up cloase, and from a distance (as seen in jaymies pics) they look quote tasteful..................or maybe people prefer dirty big powerstations?

I think the ecomonics company my GF works for is helping with the renewable targets thing for the NSW Govt.

By far the sexiest looking power generation i saw was a bi-flow turbine that was fixed to costal areas.

As a wave crashed into the side it jetted water up, spinning a turbine, then as the water volume fell back down it spun the turbine again, somehow in the same direction. Its a pitty we haven't seen many around.

I think a 50K study was commisioned for the safety aspect of some endangered bird that had a propensity for flying into spinning turbines...........the risk came out at something like 2 birds per year.........and was deemed unacceptable. figures may be a bit dubious, it was an article i read a few months back.

They should have put the 50K into a breeding program, problem solved!

They didn't study the loss of fresh water aquatic creature due to screwing their breeding cycles up and wiping them out (hydro power) until very recent.

Maybe if they were 'flying fish' this would have been looked at sooner.

don't get me started, the amount of money spent on bullshit studies annoys me to no end! especially when the money spent to study it could have solved the problem! How many birds you reckon you could breed for 50K?

Beautiful country up in the Misty Mountains where the turbines are...only about 25 minutes drive from where we are currently.

The property which the turbines pictured are on was up for sale last I heard...comes with a cafe, house and lots of other stuff as I recall.

Not sure if the turbines were included or not.

Hope you enjoyed your holiday up this way Jaymie.

What a *sigh* from the NSW Premier, his statement is not about renewable energy, but yet another method to grand stand himself and to try to make himself look like a hero by draging down the PM.

Look at me, look at me, look at me, I'm better that the other guy

 that's what I thought too Murray... But it's worth posting stuff like that to get some debate happening. Howard promised all kinds of things to help get him into his current elevated position.. & we can see what happened there, can't we :x

Wind turbines are used quite a lot through Denmark. It's something to see, as you drive along main & country roads, the flat fields of rape seed (canola) plants with big white wind collectors standing amongst them.. I think it's quite romantic. To me, it's a different mindset, to see them for what they really are & more..

I think some of the bird stuff that's arisen is from a specific type of bird in a specific location. There was one study done for, or example where, migratory birds who continue to travel in darkness.. they don't see the turbines, & apparently whole flocks could be/were decimated.. This is just from memory though.

& the wind patterns, I think that's a LOT more significant than people make it out to be. That's a definite butterfly effect, IMO... A little wind reduction here, major effects for micro-climates (& general regions even) further on etc... This is why it's important that comprehensive studies are done, to avoid 'emaciating' the wind patterns & power by putting too many turbines in one local area.

It's worth putting the money into proper research before just popping things in all over the place, just like you guys are saying _didn't_ happen with hydro. 8) Spending money now = avoiding terrible outcomes in the future.

Oooh OOh OOOH! I just read in our local paper that the green light's been given for a wind farm just outside of the ACT! WOOOHOOOO!!! Bungendore to Lake George vicinity..

There're apparently issues with an endangered woodland in that location, so I hope it's resolved without having to destroy it. That would be a real shame...

The proposal could supply electricity to approx 52,000 homes. Awesome!

imagine that, 52,000 with minimal CO2 discharge....................

Sorry if i bagged the studies too much, but every day i read some in the hearald-sun, and i sit there and think..........."you had to spend 50K to come to that conclusion"

Good stuff, kick the til- chetch ching, chetch ching.

If Howard reversed the fossel fuel budget and gave it to renewable energy forum there would be an extra 2b$ to reduce green house gasses... and stop selling our gas overseas for 1cent a ltr at, what point is there incentive to be economical with fuel if it is 1 cent ltr?
