And Rupe, the ones from our '60's- the hippie generation- free love, drug experimentation, anti-government protests, anti-war- are the ones in power today and they have become shadow fearing war mongers who are taking our rights away. They have turned into their crazy '50's parents who built backyard bomb shelters during the Cold War. I never would have believed it.

What really bothers me is that our government thinks that it can stamp out terrorism. I've studied historical war tactics, among a zillion other curiosities- I told you my thirst for knowledge is insatiable! It is very effective and Americans have even used it to their advantage in the past.
American History lesson- when the English and the French first got here, the American Indians were very effective at hit and run tactics (terrorist tactics). They would strike a target, then melt away into the forest, which was their own backyard so they knew every inch of it. So why did they lose if they had such a great advantage? Three reasons- we, Europeans, had better weaponry. We could shoot further, more acruately and we could repeat it quicker than our enemies. We, as a people, also kept coming in huge numbers from Europe. The other thing we did is genocide, which our history books do not mention. Funny, they also don't mention that Americans were not only the first to invent the atomic bomb but we also have the noteriety of being the only ones in history to have used it in an act of war and against innocent men, women and children. I don't pretty up my country's legacy- it is what it is.
So now, we have become a new nation of young free-thinking Americans and we want our independence from the English. King George won't have any of that so he sends his well-seasoned army over in huge ships. They had the same weaponry, with probably more cannons but we won out. Why? First of all, the English fought the same type of battle they were use to in Europe. They fought in rows, with red coats no less! With the Indian tactics in our repertoire, we hit and ran, again and again. Another thing that did not work to England's favor was the huge distance between our countries. There were only a few "traditional" battles in our history of independence.
To home in just how effective terrorism really is, just look to Israel. Almost from the beginning, they have delt with terrorism and have never been able to stop it because it is too fragmented to eliminate.
Quite frankly, I'm surprised it's not used here more often but I suspect that one day it will get as bad all over the world as it is in Israel.
I'm sorry to have hijacked your thread but we, as a world- not just as a race or as a country, or as an individual- are so interconnected now that we impact the other. What was the phrase? When America sneezes, does the rest of world catch a cold? We have to learn to set aside our differences- governmental, religious, ethnic, wealth, or what have you- or it will be the end of our species. Already the scientists expect a species loss of 90% when the full impact of global warming and what our species has wrought upon the world- I would hate to know that we were not in that 10% that remains.

America sneezes the rest of the world catches a cold. Sorry those days are long gone ,, Europe is vastly more influential on the money front and China will very soon be the worlds biggest economic power-house. Wonder if they can do better??? only time will tell.
Another point ,, the Atomic bomb was invented IN America ,, but by a German.
The Americans only won against England as the English chose not to use their usual brutal tactics ,, and then finally the French came to help out the Americans.

As individuals we seek peace / love and all that ,, but in reality we are an agressive creature not that far removed from wild animals and to expect true peace is expecting too much.

Since when are colds contained within their borders- China sneezes 'for real' and the rest of world get infected with it, sooner or later. We impact each other; it's not a question of who is more influential. And how prophetic of you to mention China, watch them closely in the future.
And you are right that the atomic bomb was invented by a German- one who defected because he did not want Hitler to have it. Us, Americans, may or may not have been able to crack that nut without his help but the truth is......WE DID USE IT.
Please feel free to elaborate on what you mean by English usual brutal tatics- feel the holes in my knowledge, I do not profess to know everything, only that I am trying to.
And for you to call the French "frogs", shame on you- I absolutely love their pastries. Every race/culture has attributed something to collective existance of us all. I don't think that we as a species would have made it to the moon without the more complex mathematics that were orginated by the Arab culture. On the flip, there are dark secrets to every culture too.
Not all individuals seek peace but wait for chaos- I lived close to Los Angeles when the L.A. riots broke out. A Walmart security guard was killed in our area and looting and violence broke out as far as Japan!!! The violence spread because it was shown on T.V. and people took things into their own hands, regardless of the fact that the original incident had nothing to do with them.
I do believe that we can rise above our basic instincts but our basic instincts must be met first.

I think its funny that other countries hate americans so much. America is made up of the peoples of the whole world; your own people. We are not some distinct breed of people. The only thing that sets us apart is our founding documents. Perhaps america is so bad because it represents the combined human nature of all nations on earth with its diverse population.

I find that there is a fine and precarious line to tread between racism and the very real ability to generalize about traits of people that are from a certain country. I'm happy to cop it about the Italians, and believe me i dish it out as well

Its funny you should say that. I saw bush on the news just the other day spouting out something a bout saving the american economy by creating more growth.. Thats been the policy since WW2. Make everyone consumers of goods and spend and grow. Problem is that is not sustainable and its insanity!



Well, there it is.. The reason nothing will ever change here. Our own personal money is tired up in the success of the system.. No one wants personal responsibility, no one is willing to take a lower return, or personally take charge raising money or property to secure a place for them to live in luxury while they await death. Why do we expect to still live like we do now, or better, when we are no longer productive? Personally I have seen to many retired people up close to believe the lies about retirement. Funny how we are promised something better at a later time. Always later.. I dont think retireing to non-productivity. I dont think retirement is somethign I want to do anyway. I want a living retirement. Which is where most people fine them selves after they "retire" anyway.

So, anyway, my biggest gripe is how everything is forcing me into everyones else's pattern. Im using you and your here in reference to everyone in the country. If "you" decide to pave the highway in front of me and re surface it every two years then do not expect ME to pay taxes for something I did not want and dont expect me to find another way to travel. Dont charge me $100 per year for tags. If you want medicade and I dont, do not expect me to pay for your choices ect and just take it out of my check.. I am fine taking responsibility for my life. Dont tax me for "your" choices. They law should openly support people who do not want to "play ball" by offering an opt out form. Let us live with the consequences.

Dan,,I think it's just considered "trendy"to hate the USA,,but as usual it's just the noisy minority.
Here in Aus ,the US is seen ,by the majority, as a valued and close brother nation.We remember what the US did not halt the Japanese advance across Asia that was stopped just short of our country.
I for one see the reason for and support that the bomb was used on Japan,,I truly believe that acts (actually 2) saved countless lives.
I fully support what has happened in Iraq and actually feel the US response was too soft.I'd have carpet bombed them for month after month.

Ok,,you get the idea I'm pro American, but I'm anti Americanism. I don't like the way the USA has shown such arrogance as to change the spelling of the English language or the way that ALL things are presumed to be American ( it's almost as if nothing elseexists except America).
I'll give you a few examples,,,I chat in a forum that discusses holidays in Thailand. Near EVERY American in there quotes things such as .....,I stayed in the Shangrilah hotel and paid $100 per night. Being what nature has made me,,I always ask,,if thequote is in Fijian,new zealnd or Australian dollars. 90% of the time the answer is,,of cause I meant US dollars EVERYONE would know that ( oh sheesh,,how arrogant).I sometimes ask these people where they come from,,aswer I'm from PA,,,,I reply really?? Port Adelaide good footy team there.They near DIE of shock that anyone could even possibly think thatPA stands for anything other than the "key-stone cop state of the USA.It is this type of thinking that annoys,,,,it makes me feel like slapping them ,so their eyes will open and they can see past their own borders.
Please revisit the beginning of what I have written,,I am pro American I do like most American people andthis is not meant to be a American bashing session.

Now look at my sign on log,,,,Sydney Australia,,,,hmmmm ,yes even though this is an Aussie site I have Sydney Australia written there,,why,,because I'm not so arrogant as to be unaware that there are other cities in the world called Sydney ( one in Canada to start with).

Its only english in the Commonwealth such as in Canada we're they speak French and English!

And considering I know ppl that were living in Hiroshima and Nagasaki at the time, yes they are quite old, with their bros and sisters mums and dads dead in an instant or vaparised I don't think many innocents lest not 200000 were saved!
