Rupe,
Recording the IP address would not give them any information other than tie ISP you were connected through. Most ISPs provide dynamic (more often different than same) IP addresses for each session. Normally will only provide static IP for web page servers.

It is your email address they check. Sign up for a hotmail or Yahoo email account and use that in the eBay registration.

What they should do is record your MAC... it's much harder to change that. But nobody thinks low-level anymore...

You might like to think that, but in reality (like everyone) ISP's are lazy and may flush the DNS cache for anything up to a month.....

Your IP address will typically rotate between a small range of values.

I'm sure the mods here and on any forum site can attest that most users typically log in with the same IP....

And there are other ways to determine IP addresses anyway... and MAC

Think the "big brother" types can't trace you back to a specific machine???

Just ask the bomb makers and pedophiles who get caught

correct, but they do need the support or assistance of ISPs as it's awefully hard to trace through NAT. In fact these days (now that we're not using diallup anymore) I maintain the same IP for up to 6 months or more. ADSL is a little more frequent in reallocating, but DHCP servers give long leases, and when they expire tend to renew with the same IP if possible, because it's more efficient.

IP's are not as far as I am aware used to ban people from Ebay nor could they be. If you have one computer in a household and say you get banned there could be nothing to stop for example your wife from registering. They ban people, not connections.

Just curious, would IP change when someone moved? Say, several hundred km's away?

Also, would someone like to tell me what a MAC is?

Mac address is a unique number assigned to hardware, generally network cards etc.. A little like a fingerprint of sorts. It's used in networking as a security feature from what I can work out...

Your Ip changes whenever your ISP feels like it, generally each time you disconnet your modem.

each ISP has a "range" or "block" of Ip's

they may use that block australia wide or more likely divide it into nodes for a number of areas.

I agree that Ebay is not going to ban your IP, its the same problem we face here, tomorrow some other member might have the IP addy you had today.

resign up with a new user name and a new email addy

Thanks guys, I'm back on again.

I did re-sign up before but was booted as I had to use a credit card to validate myself and apparently they do cross reference credit card details. I didn't want to have to give the phone number as it was the same so now I've moved it's all good. :D

I'll just have to get another 'Visa debit' card. (I like PayPall) I figure if anyone bad gets the details, good luck to them. Theres no money in it anyway unless I'm about to pay someone.

what goes thru someones head to by 2K worth of stuff with no intention of paying? do they think people will sent it before payment? :sigh:

best counter-scam i read about (might have even been linked here) was an UK scammer buying a laptop from the US. set up a fake escrow website that informed the seller that the funds were being held in escrow. The seller saw straight through it, and sent over a binder folder with keyboard letters stuck on it. Now for the clincher...........................

The scammer asked the seller to mark it GIFT for customs so he wouldn't have to pay duty...................the scammer said that he was pulled up at the post office and had to put $2500 as the value.

So the buyer had to pay a few hundred dollars to have the package released to him. Now that i like :)

There was a whole blog about it, with daily updates ;)

Yep, that was on here somewhere. Maybe in the funny pics thread?

She tried to tell me if I payed for it she'd pay me back! I'm not completely INSANE!

She thought when she clicked the 'Buy it now' it was coming straight of my credit card! I only realised what she'd done when I went to check on my bids to see if I'd won a few things for DH and I spotted the balance owing!

I didn't dare tell DH 'cause I think he'd strangle her. I was certainly tempted!

Paypal will not let you assign a credit card number to two accounts - nice that - as long as you've got a paypal account, no1 can use your CC number with paypal!.

All you (may) have to do is: remove your CC details from your old account, and add them to a new account.
I wouldn't expect they've blocked your CC number forever
Hope this works for you.
