Was the Frank Lloyd Wright chair something you did on your machine or do you still have some parts to make?

Local Hacker space on that chair.

I'm still behind on mine. Just a few more printed parts needed.

I have steppers coming.

still need,

Hardware
Arduino Mega with Ramps, stepper drivers and LCD screen
J-Head Hot End
V slot rail
Belts and pulleys

this is awesome! 3D printing your own 3D printer?? I loved the projects I did in high school with these tools, and I've been wanting one ever since. Maybe there are public 3D printers around where I live.....

I did not order that stuff.

I ordered hardware $77.83 worth and need just a bit more.

I am also going to try a planetary gear extruder instead of a geared stepper that is $35-45.

It's not finger friendly. Even with a press fit on the stepper I snagged a finger.

Several other people are making the griffin printer.

This one is done in glow in the dark PLA. Waiting to be finished and is just the assembled frame.

nice to have a resident expert on 3d printing here! Rob k excuse my noob question but can i use the "string" that comes from a lawn trimmer for 3d printing or is that not the correct material?

I have herd about using it, but have never tried it. I know a few people that have with good results. I would like to try it because it can give strong but flexible prints. There is a few rolls of it in our box at the hackerspace, but it would need to be baked again for moisture. Weed eater line has a lot of moisture in it and you have to bake it for heat it to remove it. Bucket with a 100w bulb for 10-15 hours can dry out the roll enough for printing. Some bake the roll in a oven for 24 hours at 180F.

Temps go around ABS temps of 230c-240c with it.

There is http://taulman3d.com/buy-618-s.html Taulman 618 is commercial nylon filament but you can get a 3lb roll of the weed eater line for $22 locally that I have seen.

3D Printer is starting up again.

I have about 90% of everything to start building. I will be going with a Azteeg X5 controller and Viki LCD instead of a Arduino Mega, Ramps board and LCD. About a $125 price difference for a much better stepper control. Also Print speed can go from from 100mm/s to over 300mm/s on the delta printers.

Not that it was bad before but I think it was worth the difference in price even if it's just to get triple the print speed - good choice Rob :thumbright:.

can we print pipe fitting that can handle the same pressure as pvc?

On the 3D Print Board this very question was asked...

Quote:
Feasibility of 3D Printed Pipe Fittings
I am working with a laboratory system that runs at a water pressure of ~40psi. We currently build the system using PVC parts, however there are no parts that fit the specifications we need, so we end up spending a lot of time hand-modifying the fittings.

I am curious how feasible it would be to print some of the fittings rather than modify existing PVC fittings. ABS and other plastics would also work for our application, so the material is not an issue. My primary question is if a 3D printed part could easily withstand 40psi?

First answer...

Quote:
You absolutely can. However, you'll need some testing to determine how thick to make the walls and the best infill patterns and percentages. Also, some of your models will likely need a lot of support material.

So it seems that the answer is yes, but I'm sure it depends upon the material used and how the part is designed.

Rob,

That planetary gear is fantastic looking! I was kind of getting out of robotics about the time all
the 3D printer hacks started surfacing, and now when I go to the States and see an off-the-shelf 3D
printer sitting right in the printer isle of a large computer store, I am flabbergasted. Years ago we
(a buddy and I) built an XYZ CNC vertical mill using a microscope stand from a Texas Instruments
warehouse clearing sale and steppers. I wrote all our G-code by hand pretty much with a calculator.

So, now with things like the 3D printer you're making, do you pretty much just draw up a model in
your favorite 3D CAD and hit the print button? I don't mean to minimize things, it sounds too cool!
