Ive heard similar things about Jade Perch loosing their high omega 3 content... Something about they develop it in the wild from the natural foods they eat but when moved to a commercial feed the levels drop considerably.

Ive thought about trying two things to correct this in Tilapia,

First: I raised a group of Tilapia on high protein trout feed and they are reaching 1kg each. I want to call WVU or another university and pay to have the omega levels tested soon.

Second: I have other Tilapia raised on commercial 32% protein Tilapia omnivore food and I want to send one for a control, then take a few and do a 1 month green water " purge" followed by 4 day clean water purge and send those in to see if it jacks up the omega content. Should be interesting results.

The first treatment should almost certainly work.

The second might. Since omega 3s, 6s and the like come initially from algae and then bio-accumulate in the same way mercury does they might not have enough time to accumulate if only in green water for a few weeks. It would help if we knew how long omegas persist in fish once they have been consumed. If it is a short time then increasing their intake just prior to harvest should result in measurable increases in omega concentrations in the fish. If they persist for a long time then they would need to be fed extra omegas for a long time for it to make a difference.
